It's not about a Dakota, but a Dodge nonetheless. My boss has a '69 Dart 500 w/a 440 and an auto trans. He's haveing problems with Reverse. The forward gears work fine, but when in reverse the engine revs up but the car moves very slowly. I haven't seen it happen- only told about it. I figured someone here would have some input on this. Did they use the 727 behind big blocks? I asked him, but he didn't know (he doesn't know about 'em, just drives 'em)

I know enough about this to be dangerous, have had a similar problem. When you start to lose reverse in the older A/T it is most often failure of the high clutch pack.Check for a misadjusted shift linkage or loose lever on the valve body stem that sticks out on the driver's side of the tranny between the cooling lines. The advanced stages of this problem is that the car will loose reverse and then will not hold speed or accelerate in drive...rebuild time. There will also be graphite colored muck in the pan when the tranny is opened indicating component failure. Kick down linkage adjustment is important and can lead to problems. Lastly, the only trans offered for the 440 was the 727, any other model would need an adapter to bolt up.

Thanks for the info. Good stuff. It sounds to me that you know enough to get out of the Danger Zone:)
