Subject: Autolite 3923's

Message:
What is everbody using, copper or platinums? I read a while back that they give you a 4 hp gain but which plug was that with? Does anybody know the difference between the two? I already bought the regular copper plugs but was wondering if I should upgrade to the platinums for my 4.7. Any ideas? Thanks.

Dodge tech support recommends not using platinum plugs because the core is much thinner and does not disipate the heat as well a copper plug.

That said, some folks run the Bosh +4 platinums and feel they give better performance that the Autolite 3923 coppers.

The Autolite 3923's are a slightly better configuration since they are a standard tip plug (not an "Extended Special Power Tip" like the factory plugs).

Reason being is that the extended tip plugs have a tendency to cause detonation (minor timing issue but mainly design).

The Bosch +4's have only "worked ok" in a very small assortment of Magnum engines. Overall personal opinion is garbage. The biggest complaint is that the work great for about the first week and then the performance deteriorates rapidly with mis-fires and detonation (pinging).

The Autolite 3923's are the choice for the 3.9/5.2/5.9L engines and have spoken with a few who run them in their 4.7L's as well with success.

Bernd, any info on the new autolite titanium plugs that just came out? Just saw an ad for them. I think their main benefit is the antisiezing property's of the titanium (in the threads) but wasnt sure if anyone had heard anythig else about them.

I put the Autolite 3923's (factory suggested gap on the hood decal) a Borg Warner brass contact cap & Borg Warner brass contact rotor..... It ran like a different truck. No hesatation, crisper throttle response, smoother idle, better gas mileage. With only 4500 mile on it.

That is the 1st thing to do to a new truck!

I have run both the 3923's and +4's in my 4.7. The idle seems smoother with the +4's but I switched to the 3923's after hearing about potential problems with the +4's. I have not seen or heard of any substantiated proof about +4 failures but I did not want to take a chance.

How about spltfires? Has anybody used these? I have heard that they can cause your vehicle to run hotter plus nobody seems to have posted any performance gains with these. Anyone have any experience?

Kennungesser - They're called "Super Sonic Spark Plugs". I came across them at http://www.americanewsnet.com/shopping/auto/supersonic.htm. I can't say anything to their performance because I haven't used them - I was curious about them and trying to find out information as well. Was wondering if they're as good as claimed without undesirable side effects (excess heat, etc). If you find out anything let us know. ;)

I run Splitfires, though after this thread I'm changing to Autolites (replaced wires & coil & soon cap & rotor, so might as well finish the job). It was years ago when I switched to them from stock, but I clearly remember not remembering any change positive or negative. :-) -tk

I am an old Die-Hard SplitFire user and will back them up on most of their claims. Yes, they work very well in the Magnum engines...BUT...I tried a set of the Autolite 3923's almost a year ago and haven't bought another set of SplitFires again.

Ont he Titanium, long-life plug. If you're wanting more performance...stick with the tried and true choice.

I can attest to the Platinum's being garbage. I bought a set before I found this board. They were awesome for about the first 2000 miles or so, then they started to ping under load. I let it go for about 10,000 miles (just hated to throw away $40 in spark plugs), but I recently switched to the 3923's, and put in the Borg-Warner cap and rotor, along with new wires. What an amazing difference. My idle is smoother, My cold stalling problem vanished, and my gas mileage went up.

The Platinum +4's came out looking burnt to crisp. They were not the normal light brown color, but almost white, with black splotches where the spark fires. I don't know if this is typical of platinums or not, but I didn't like it.

So it would seem from a few of you guys that the hot setup is a set of 3923's and the Borg Warner cap/rotor? Does that apply to the 4.7? My truck idles a little rough when first started and I am wondering if that would help.

About the splitfires, I don't know if they make your engine run hotter. I can tell you that the design of the plug can be a problem since the "v" design can vary in gap spacing. If its only the slightest bit off, the spark will favor one side, causing you to actually lose performance. Thats the reason you've seen the price drop from $6.00 a plug to $2 and $3 a plug.

Pulled my +4s (with 20K miles on em) last weekend to check
them, the all look great, clean light tan, no buildup, after 20K miles
the truck runs smooth as ever (!) and hauls A$$ . . .

My $0.02, 4.7L opinion, can't speak for 5.2/5.6 . . .

whiterob182 - I can't help you with the cap and rotor, since I have the 318. However, I have heard from several people that the MSD plug wires for the 318 are actually a little cheaper than the ones made for the v6, and you get two extra wires. Part# is 32189. I bought mine from Summit. Keep that in mind when you are looking for wires, whether they are MSD or Taylors. If you do not plan on a blower or MSD ignition, go with the Taylor 8mm wires. Cheaper than the MSD and just as good.

I just changed the plugs and all was ok except the #8 looked bad. The plug was oily. What's this belly pan issue... could this be a hint of trouble brewing? What's my next examination step? I think there's something about pulling the throttle body off and looking under it???

Help? :-)

Thanks!
Wal
