Message: I recently bought a big block hemi out of a dodge power wagon. Im not sure of the exact ci of the motor but i think it is a 440. I was wondering if anyone has ever put a big block hemi (or not a hemi) in their dakota. If you have please e-mail me and let me know what kinds of mods needed to be done. thanks!

Message: Its probably a 392 cu.in. It will be stamped on the front of the block just ahead of the valley cover. I take it it was an older power wagon, like in the 50's ? Could be a 331, 354, or 392. They also made some baby hemi's (277 cu.in.) If the distributer is in the back,it's the old style hemi.

Message: the newer hemis that of 426 cubic inches wasnt put in anything but cars after 66 i believe. chances are it was the old "whale" motor under the hood, heavy as hell but tough as nails. there is so much bloody meat on that engine that you can bore and deck till the cows come home

Message: Hemispherical cumbustion chambers. You can get bigger valves in them and the power is more even than with a wedge chamber. The spark plug ignites the air/fuel mix and the flame travels down the middle of the cylinder. It pushes evenly on the top of the piston.Thats the basics.

Message: OMG!!! If you actually put that dang thang in a dak, it would be so friggin' mean!!! But I agree with DAHEMIKOTA in that most likely it is the 392 hemi. But it doesn't matter which hemi it is it would be one mean dak. Please post some pics if you do the swap I wana see that! :)

Message: www.engine-swaps.com
these are the guys!! I am in the process of putting a 400 into my 90 Dak. These guys guarentee thier kit to work with NO WELDING!
I am putting a bored .040 over, 440 cranked, stroked 400 with a TF727(from a WA state trooper car) and an 8 3/4 rear end. I hope to stand it straight up! We'll see.

Message: Remember all...that even though the hemi is a powerful engine...it's not THAT powerful - unless you build 'em up. From the factory...there were street cars with the "425hp" street hemi (drastically underrated - for insurance purposes) such as the '70 Cuda, that weigh a hell of a lot less than our trucks do, and they wouldn't do wheel stands. The best way to make a wheel-y car is to move the wieght towards the rear, and place as much weight BEHIND the rear axle as possible...a truck is usually not a good starting point for this! (Unless you want to do some HEAVY mods, and put the engine in the bed of the truck!!!) Just my $.02. But even in stock form, if you shoehorned one of these engines in between the fenders of a Dak, you'd have one hell of a truck. But keep in mind too, that the cars with the 440 (not hemi) 6-pack (three two-barrel) carbureted engines were often FASTER in the quarter mile than their 426 street HEMI bretheren...

Message: It sounds like there are some newcomers to Hemis here. If you have any doubts, look at the valve cover. If they are HUGE and have spark plug wires in the center it is a Hemi. I grew up with the son of the local Mopar dealership owner and got to play with some of the originals. Sometimes we even told Dad we were sneaking one off the lot!
Denny had a '70 HemiCuda for awhile and was it a trip! I actually got to race it against a splitwindow 'Vett once. Oh well, enough nostolgic old fart ranting.
