Subject: Bizzare R/T Problem..HELP!! IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 R/T which I have recently just added a Mopar PCM and Kenne Belle pulleys. The truck ran fine other than at idle the battery will go dead if you let it sit to long (Because of the pulleys), then about 1 week later I installed the Mopar headers and started to notice a funny idleing problem. When it sits at idle for more than 2 minutes it starts to breathe real heavy (Loud intake Noise)and idles rough and almost stalls out if you don't rev it up, the trucks shakes like hell also. It is almost like it has a really lumpy cam but only when it sits. I just ignored it and figured that it must be normal for all the mods to act this way together then the chack engine light came on.
I took it to the Dodge dealer and it turns out it had a bad Oxygen sensor they told me who ever did the headers must of damaged it. They replaced it light went out the idleing problem was still there and 3 days later the light is back on. I assume it has something to do with my Mods can anyone help I can take it back to the deawler but they are going to just replacing parts, I want to find out what is causing this problem. HELP!!!!
Thanks In adavance...

Message: It sounds like what happended when I had one of my spark plug wires touching my header. It burned a hole in it and was grounding out the spark. Long shot but check that out.

Message: The problem with the noise after sitting sounds like the clutch fan.It will make a loud whooshing sound. Also your idling problem sounds like your battery is weak.I have seen some of our trucks not want to idle when the batteries start to go south.Check the battery and when you hear the loud noise I bet you'll find the fan clutch is engaged.

Message: I checked for the plug wires and they are OK and now the engine light is gone after sitting for a night. I have a question for "the dog" I have just recently put pulleys on my R/T and that lowers the output of the alternator so sometimes the voltage is like 9 & 10 Volts if you sit at idle to long, would this cause the idleing problem?? I have even killed the battery before sitting at idle to long. But the wierd thing is it only does it sometimes.

Message: I had the same problem with my truck. One night in the winter I started my truck and let it run for a hour. It killed the battery and then it could never charge up good enough. Here is how I fixed it, I put the stock alternator pulley back on and then toyed with some different size belts till one fit. PROBLEM SOLVED

Message: I have the number somewhere i'll look. But I didn't have kb pulleys so it may be differant. Plus I had to go with a 6 groove belt bcause there were no 7 groove in that length. Still works great though

Message: I think you need to try what punisher said. From what I have seen on these trucks is they come in on a tow truck cause of a no start condition. You try to start them and nothing.I would get my trusty jumper pac and they would start and die.Now I have to keep feathering the gas to keep running and get it to my bay.I would then check the battery with my tester and the battery is junk. You have to realize that you vehicle is running off the battery not the alternator. The alternator is what keeps the battery up to snuff. When you changed the alternator pulley you changed the output of it and now the battery is not delivering the demand that the electrical system is needing. If you still have the mopar battery I can tell you that its junk from the getgo. If it was my truck I would put the stock pulleys back on and spend my money on something else

Message: Even though it effects the alt in a bad way it helps the motor alot because it is taking away some of the work off the crank. They give you 3 pulleys so the belt stays the same size. Some underdrive pulleys give you two pulleys and a belt. Don't get rid of the pulleys they help. All uprades are not necessarily bolt on for every day conditions.

Message: I had udp on my truck and every time I started it up while they were on the truck it would idle very rough for a minute untill the battery was charged a bit. I suspect that you are just experiencing a low voltage situation while at idle. They belt mods sounds like it should work.

Message: I had what sounds like the same problem. The truck would start, idle for awhile, then die. If I kept the revs up a little bit it would be fine.
New battery- Problem solved.
