Well the title pretty much speaks for itself. I want to put the new hemi the rams have in my 2001 rc 4x4 dakota. What all would i have to switch? Im guessing tranny, wiring harness, all the other engine bay goodies.......

As a regular poster here already noted, a big
reason DC doesn't yet put the 5.7 in the present
Dak is because there's too much stuff that just
won't fit right or is unavailable (for example a
manual tranny that will take the torque).

So, even though Banks can put a Cummins in a
Dak, and someone else shoehorned in a V-10,
doesn't mean it'll be easy to do the 5.7. Keep
us posted on your engineering work; this will be
interesting to see.

For one, the 5.7L has clearance issues with the firewall/cowl area on the current generation trucks. Without some rework there, it won't fit.

For two, the controllers are COMPLETELY different for the hemi. The new units are 4 connector whereas the ones we have are 3. Sensor layout and wiring is completely different. Not much chance you would be able to splice it into your current truck and make it work with any reasonable amount of effort.

But if banks can find a tranny to handle the torque from the turbo diesal could one not be foudn for the hemi? As well, cant the firewall be cut back? after all someone put a v-10 in a pt cruiser. Its not a project im going to undertake now, i have to save for university but im hoping to be able to do it later rather then buying a new truck.

Banks has a team of professional fabricators. Specialists in various areas like brakes, suspension and sheet metal work, not to mention being a well respected company within the aftermarket community that would net them assistance on areas they might have some problems with. To compare a garage effort to what they pulled off is kind of a stretch, don't ya think?

True, but it proves that a tranny could be found
after all they didnt make one did they? from
what i remember they used one off of
something else. It would be a neat projec
anyways. 345hp in the dakota? thats 100
more then the rt almost and it could still be
turboed or sced. Definately take a lot of hard
work and effort to do it though.

My R/T has an estimated 500 BHP, so the 350 offered by the Hemi considering the work involved doesn't impress me.

You could take any 360 and push it to 500 BHP with ~$8k using a blower. Seems quite a bit easier than all the fab associated with a 5.7L install, not to mention the nightmare with the electronics.

GrafiteR/T, I have been considering this i have a KB sc'ed 5.9 and i could spend $5K having the motor rebuilt for more boost to get 500hp and then your kinda maxed out so to speak on engine HP, the hemi with KB is 500BHP without major mods plus there is alot of weight difference as the hemi is all aluminum personaly i think if a guy has the monney to spend on a conversion, go for it i think its worth the monney spent.

Banks used the NV-5600. Which has a 350Lb iron case. That's right, 350Lb CASE. They made the whole thing fit by cutting a hole in the firewall and having a cylinder and a half poke through.

Shane, the KB hemi is nothing more than marketing fluff at this point. There are some major issues with the drive by wire. Unless and until DC steps up to the plate and helps KB with that kit, I would not count on it. I'm fortunate enough to be involved with a PCM tuning program that is about to hit the streets, and I can tell you with confidence that DC is in no hurry to let the Hemi controller info out just yet. Our stuff is limited to 5.2, 5.9 and 4.7 stuff and it's only those apps for a reason.

BTW, my 5.9 is all stock bottom end. Assuming you tune them correctly, the Magnums can take that kind of power. Granted, your room for error is slim with the cast pistons and I'd be more comfortable with nice set of forged pistons, but it can be done with the stock stuff.

Well either way im looking to eventually ditch the 3.9l i got in my truck. Its fine for now but later i want to put something a little heftier in. Im only 17 and dont have much of a background in mechanics (none really) so im just looking aroudn and the hemi seemed like a cool idea. Im sticking with cosmetic mods till my warranty runs out anyways which wont happen for a couple of years at least. By then ill be most of the way through University and have much more spending money to really play with my truck. The one reason i wasnt too impressed with the R/T was that it did not come with a 5spd option. That was the only reason i did not buy it.

GrafiteR/T well I hope it will be available soon but it sounds like its gona be 1-2 years before the fmu's will be available, I will consider keeping my factory crank in that case would save alot of monney.

Yes, but i didnt like the setup of the 4.7 at the time and there was no 5.2 with a 5spd. By the way, I live in Canada and it IS university here not college so think before you speak. I applaud your obvious genius. I was searching for informative responses and answers, not trolls.
