Subject: "Cold Air" Intake Question

I've been thinking for a while now about adding an air intake system - one of the usual suspects; K&N fipk, Inense, 360.

I have spent a good deal of time reviewing what others on this site have said about their personal experience - "looks good", "butt dyno", "sounds awesome", "26hp increase", etc. All very interesting, but...,

So, let me ask this question:

If I stated that a "cold air" intake system looks good, sounds good, comes in a variety of beatiful finishes, but provides marginal performance benifits at best on a 4.7, would I be wrong?

Would the above statement be correct as written, but incorrect if I were to add both an intake system along with, say, a Magnaflow muffler?

Thanks, Darryl. You are no doubt correct about more air in/more air out = HP. The posts here on the subject of "cold" air intakes seem somewhat conflicted regarding the loss of low end torque when using these intakes.

I think what I'll do is go ahead and install one - probably a volant or K&N fipk, along with a less restrictive muffler (perhaps a Magnaflow) - and just see how it works.

If it doesn't work out the worst that could happen is I'll have some parts for sale. LOL

Thanks, Dan. I've seen others mention those mods, as well. I would have to think the HO intake/cams would work well with increased breathing afforded by an aftermarket air intake and exhaust mod. I'll look into that.

I have the intense Z tube, and love it. Couldn’t tell you how much HP gain. I didn’t dyno it. But seat of the pants improvement is decent. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to drive it for the last 3 weeks. Some jerk in a Mustang rear ended me doing about 45. So it’s in the shop. Has anyone ever heard of an insurance company putting a new frame on? They said it’s cheaper then totaling it.

As for Sin-City that’s how he seams to talk to everyone. Darryl hit the nail on the head with his reply.

Not at all.

I have the 360airintakez on my 4.7. It "looks good, sounds good, and provides marginal performance benefits."

However, I'd still recommend it, for those very reasons!

I don't know who that guy is, but he has to live every day knowing he's on the bottom of the totem pole. Maybe that's why he's so angry.

I also have the Intense Performance Z-tube, and absolutely love the thing. With either the Z-tube or the FIPK, you might also think about removing the little plastic panel in the Northeast corner of the engine bay (next to the radiator). When you are cruising on the freeway, you barely press the accelerator to keep your speed. It's great. The HP gain may not be that much, but the overall driveability is greatly improved. Also, I noticed a solid gain with my catback exhaust (in contradiction to many peoples' opinions about the 4.7). I really think it is because of the Z-tube and having removed the plastic panel. Simply put, the truck cruises like no other truck I've ever driven before.

I can agree with Vince only I did my catback first then did the 68mm TB (I have a 2000) and K&N homebrew. Really woke up the truck as far as it's "Voice" and it's muscle... Put the 65MM TB back on along with the stock intake before I trade it in and it was a definite dissapointment... these mods like each other on a 4.7.

Chris, on the 68mm throttle body - did you use a stock 2001 or later TB, or did you go with the Fastman or F&B?

What seems to be coming into focus here is that on the 4.7, simply adding an air intake system by itself is not worthwhile if looking only at performance. But, an after-market cold air intake system plays an important role in bringing the engine to life when coordinated with other mods, such as exhaust, a larger TB, and possibly cams.

Does that sound about right?

Give the man another degree! You hit it exactly. I have an MBRP dual exit exhaust (s4028, I believe). I love it, but it is actually a little louder than I wanted. It sounds deep and strong, and I guarantee no one would ever say it sounds cheap or annoying. I bought it from John Mercedes at Southeastrt.com His site isn't up yet, but you can email him directly if you are interested. He was about $50 cheaper than anyone else. I think I paid about $330 (aluminized version). Add $30 for shipping, another $260 for the Z-tube, and you've spent about $600 for a very nice setup. Very well worth it, if you ask me. I'm waiting for my bonus so I can do the cam swap! I wish I fealt a little more comfortable digging into my engine and could save on the labor cost. Not so. I'm going to have to foot the $400+ for labor if I want someone to back the work. Oh well, at least it will be done right. I trust my mechanic.

Unless you are driving through a river, you won't have a problem. I should also say, as long as you buy a reputable filter, you won't have a problem. Moisture is okay going into your intake. Streams of water are not. The filter is dense enough that it will absorb the water, and let moist air through. Even if it becomes saturated, the water will drip from the bottom of the filter, on the outside of the lining. Trust me, you'll be fine.

I have been running the intake setup with the flap trimmed 50% from the headlight, and a OEM-type air cleaner hose between the opening at the radiator and headlight. The hose is attached to the stock air box with a K&N drop-in. I've driven at highway speeds in very heavy rain with no problems whatsoever. The air filter is up high in the air box, maybe the water won't travel upwards easily. The performance increase was noteworthy. Total cost: $44 for K&N + $5 hose=$49! For the life of me, I can't see big bucks for a FIPK.

01M, Where did you get the OEM style air hose/tube? - I assume it is the acordian-type tubing? 3 inch, 4 inch?

How did you fit the air hose/tube to the stock air box and to the opening you created by removing part of the flap at the side of the radiator. The possibility of utilizing the cooler air that would enter the front of the engine compartment at that location has always intrigued me.

Vince - you are no doubt on the right track based on the research I have done on this site. I also think you are wise to recognize the limitations of your mechanical ability. I used to race a C Gas '57 Chev at several strips in Cal; did a lot of the work myself - but that was then - I would not feel confident in installing cams in the 4.7.

I think I will probably go with a Magnaflow set up and a as yet undetermined air intake system.
