Subject: Limited Slip? Anti Spin? WTF! IP: Logged
Message: Could I please get some knowledgable posts in reference to the difference between "Limited Slip Differencial" and "Anti-Spin Differencial." I have people telling me that their the same thing but named differently. I have a '01 RC 4.7 5spd 3.55 anti-spin rearend, I havent baked the tires yet to find out for myself if only "one wheel" is going to spin while the other does nothing... HELP!

Message: They are the same thing. Every company has it's own name for a locking rear end plus over the years people have stuck their names on them (such as positive traction). There is different ways to build the locking mechanism but they are all locking rear ends.

Message: Like I said in the chat room, and in case anyone else is wondering, They are the same. Wayne hit the nail on the head. Anti-spin is Dodge's name for a limited slip. Posi traction was the name that GM coined for their limited slips. Ford has usually just refered to them as limited slips. A limited slip is NOT the same as a locker.

Message: Yeah I forgot that one. Thats another Ford phrase. They used (don't know if they still do or not) Auburn limited slips and called them trac locks. Dodge used them for a little while too.

Message: Thank you all for responding. I looked at the rear axle today and a sticker on it says 3.55 TRAC LOCK, probably another name for it.
What other rear ends are available for Dakota's??

Message: The 3.55 is your gear ratio. If you mean what other rear ends as in gear size, if yours is the 9 1/4 inch, which it should be, then you can get a 3.92 and a 4.10 that I know of. I don't think there are any other sizes available yet. If you have the 8 1/4 then I'm not sure.

Another way to tell if you have TRAC-LOC is to read the metal "tag" underneath one of the bolts holding the cover on the rear differental.

One tire in the grass and the other on the pavement. Punch it! If they both spin it's a posi.
This is more fun and no jack time. BUT PLEASE USE YOUR OWN YARD FOR THE PROCEDURE!

Message: I have a question about the additive, my truck is a 99 and has 46k miles on three occasions over the last four years the rear axle starts to moan and creak. The first time I used the Mopar fluid and additive, and the last two i used a synthetic fluid and the Mopar additive. What gives ?, is this common ?, it is like the additive wears out ? It is hard to belive it needs to be on its fourth fluid fill. Maybe I can just add the modifier next time ?

Message: You notice it when the truck has sit over night, then back out of the drive, especially when turning. The sound is like the rear brakes are shot and the linings are draging on the drums, and you can feel a slight vibration, but this was checked and a-ok.

start simple and dont expect the worst... but dont rule it out. You have many bearings that can be check and different parts. Check the axle bearings and carrier bearings. Also, i dont know if you mentioned it but if you have a limited slip, it might of spun some of the clutch pack.
with the brakes, did you just check them or did you replace them? If not, i would have the drums turned and new shoes put on... never hurts to have new brakes. Also check your parking brake adjustment.
just to through some ideas at you.

Message: If it is only laying one strip then you do not have limited slip. Open Diffs will always spin the passenger side tire. Sounds like yours was mis-labeled. Sucks man. I'd take it back to the dealership and have them sort that out.

Message: AntiSpin: jack up the back and turn one wheel. If the other turns in the opposite direction then you have an open rear. Sometimes when the two wheels have uneven traction, one will spin more than the other.

I feel robbed... next question would be... what are my options? something cheap yet effective... dealers can eat my azz...
