Message: Have any of you guys made your own K&N fipk intake for your 4.7? Is there any tips or tricks for building your own intake? Website for ideas?
What's better to use PVC or steel for piping?
Anything will help, thanks in advance.

rid of the air hat and the rubber tubing, but
stilll using the original air box for now. But the
elbow and the tubing i used black 3" PVC piping
from the local hardware store and 2 3" rubber
connectors with hose clamps. So far i have gained
about 1 mpg. Just make sure you reset the computer

Message: Anthony, I just ripped out the snorkel from the fender and airbox, bought some 3" aluminum clothes dryer exhaust hose, you kow that flexible stuff, at home depot for maybe $5. I connected one side to the air box and the other I cut a small hole through the rubber wall next to the radiator and pushed the hose through.I painted the hose with flat black paint. It looks like it were a stock factory item after you paint it. I also got a 4" patch of stainless steel fine mesh screen and blocked the front of the hose with it. I live in the country and mice seem to like a warm air box for breedin'. I also replaced the stupid 1" plastic nut for the airhat with a 1/4-20 "Y" wing nut I got from the auto parts store. It's easier to remove the airhat that way. It's not bad for less than $10. Relf.

Message: I have the same Homebrew Intake setup as everybody else. As far as more HP/Torque I can now get over most of the hills in Missouri w/out using 4th or 3rd gear. I have also noticed when I'm in overdrive and I press the pedal in slightly more than usual (w/out shifting gears), I can now accelerate unlike before. And actually accelerate quite quickly as well. If you want pictures or anything just let me know.

Message: I've been using a drop in K&N filter for months on the factory setup. I just built a new intake with 3" PVC, one 90 elbow, 8" PVC to the factory box and two Fernco fittings to mate it together. I've driven 20 miles or so on and I'm not impressed at all. I'm almost convinced I've lost response and torque on the lower end.
What's up? I thought this was suppose to add hp and throttle response? I do like the sound when I get on it but that's about it.

Message: Adam - as I suspected, Big Pitty's claims should not be believed. In the general forum, he makes the same claim about no longer needing 4th or 3rd gear to go up hill but says he thinks its due to STP treatment. I think to say he is using bad science would be generous...

Message: Thanks for your feedback Kowalski.
I'm curious why the stock setup works better in lower end performance, than opening up the air passage to 3". I'm mainly interested in better gas mileage and hp. Do you think I will get this with this setup? I might end up putting the stock setup back on.
Your thoughts?
Thanks

Message: It could have to do with the velocity of the incoming fuel mix - a larger passage will flow the mix, but not have the same velocity going into the cylinder at low rpms. Which year and motor do you have ?

Message: I'd expect freer flowing intake and exhaust mods to help with milage more on Mopar's other motors. Many have claimed loss of low end torque with these mods on the 4.7. Personally, I've experienced better performance and no change in milage going with a K&N drop in, ported TB, PCM flash, and HO cams. You might see a small gain in milage with a PCM flash if you can keep your foot out of it, but that means some down time for your truck unless you have another PCM to run. I'm happy with the 15 mpg I get but I have a short commute. Let us know if you see gains with your intake mods.

Message: Alright back to clarifying things KOWALSKI.
First of all I agree with a few things that you are saying. #1 being I think a lot of people brain's tell them they are gaining more HP/Torque or MPG by mods. I'm not contradicting my self here. However I do think some mods work for some people's truck and some just work in there brains. I think everything is just an individual's truck case. In my case I think what I have stated about the last two products I tried is true. My experience with STP greatly helped me gain fuel economy and some performance and still is today, and my intake only helped me with performance.
#2 In theory I would like to believe by adding a free flowing intake and exhaust, it would lower low end torque. Yes my exhaust didn't make much of a change in my truck's performance or MPG, however I believe, key word, the intake on the other hand did. Not any in fuel economy but it did in both low and high end performance.
And obviously nothing is instant. Both products I tried had there time and miles in between to test out. I first tried the STP and 2.5 Weeks and over 1000Miles, I installed the intake. Now the intake has 1.5 Weeks on it and 950Miles on it.

Message: Big Pitty - where you contradict yourself is when you claim you can go over hills without downshifting because of fuel treatment in the general forum; and then claim here that it is because of the intake mod...
Some things ARE instant - I saw instant gains with both the cam change and the PCM flash. You make some valid points too - such as mods may have different effects on different trucks - for example, I think the PCM flash may be more noticable on automatic trucks (manuals may be programmed with more spark advance than autos); and people with manual tranny seem to notice more from a ported TB(maybe because they're more in tune with the transmissions demands). There's usually some sense to be made of things though, its not haphazard. You might want to consider the HO cams for your next mod, I think you'd really like the gains from that.

Message: Actually my next mod is going to be CAMS. What kind of cams do you have? There is some on KRC Performance and there are Mopars HO Cams. I would definately have to say that cams is well worth the money and probably one of the best cheap mods for the dakota. But I won't know until I install my cams. Obviously cams would void my warranty right? Either way I'm going to install them here in the next month.

Message: I have the factory Jeep HO cams; I believe the least radical KRC cams are the same. My installation went smoothly, largely because I paid attention to what others have generously posted of different ways to screw it up. It's worth a search of some of the older posts. I don't think it voids warranty; and would be hard for them to notice even if it did. They are stock parts after all. Its a good idea to zip tie the timing chain onto the gears so it can't accidently jump and caution is needed not to stress the cam pins that locate the gears. Gaskets are reusable. Good luck !
