Message: That's the question of the year Ian. With trucks like Duners T/C, or the other S/C daks running the 5spd, they should have grenaded the tranny a long time ago!

Message: From what I hear if your trucks torque is 350 or more then you are skating on thin ice. Guys like dunner are lucky that theirs hasnt greaded yet from all the racing and abuse it takes.

a guy that's running high 10's with his
Mustang 5.0 and a stock Borg Warner T-5! (It
leaves pretty soft though, all things
considered.)
I just received an email from New Venture
Gear that said the NV-3500 is rated for 300ft
lbs of torque and that they could build a
NV-3500 that could handle the 5.9 and up to
350 ft lbs.
Another interesting bit is they told me the
NV-3500 for the 5.2 is exactly the same as the
4.7, which means.......(drum roll please)
I should be able to use the Keisler Automotive
Tremec kit designed for the 5.9 with my 4.7.
Does any of this make sense?

| Max Rated Towing Capacity? IP: Logged
Message: It's MY understanding that the transmission's torque rating is based on towing the maximum rated weight and applying the 300 ft-lbs of torque all at the same time. I'm not sure what the max gross weight is for this combo - but I think it's right at 10,000 lbs! If you back off on the weight than you can theoretically increase the torque applied. That's why I'm so careful about making extra power while I'm towing a trailer.
Or at least that's how I THINK it's supposed to work! hahaha

Message: Let's not forget that every manufacturer of every part is going to rate each piece conservatively. If the transmission was only rated for 300 lbs of tq. literally, then you could shatter the thing by adding a Flowmaster muffler to your combo. There are all kinds of tolerances and specs that we arent' privy to, and that allows the New Process people and DC some room before they have to start doing warranty repairs.
I know of at least one 11-sec Gen 2 Dakota with a stout 408 that made hundreds of passes on an NV-3500 and actually blew apart the Ford 9" rear, but the NV-3500 was still there, crusing right along. They will handle a LOT of power, but not for long periods of time (such as Duner mentioned).
The part about the bolt pattern/Keisler set-up is definitely good news!

Message: Also something to think about, it may be able to handle 400LB/ft, but is the manufacturer willing to guarentee it? If Dodge went ahead and put them in R/Ts, they'd also have to honor the warrentee on them. In Duner's case, it's not a problem. The liability just isn't there.

Message: I could easily see a grinding shift at 5,500rpm shattering or chipping a gear, but synchronizers and the input shaft would go before the gears themselves. (in most cases)
I think Duners application shows how well the NV-3500 stands up. I think the whole NV-3500 voodoo is all a crock of crap. If there's anything to worry about, I would say it's the clutch. It seems that's the only complaints so far when folks start adding a lot of power.
Mine is making 300+ft/lbs from 2,500rpm to redline peaking at 351ft/lbs. The tranny in the hard driving conditions I've put it through has not showed any signs so far of weakness. I'm not saying it's bullet-proof, I even have my reservations about it's capacity. Knowing that Duner is making that much more power than I am, puts my mind at ease a bit more.
And like Alex said, if ratings were true, and everything was based off of that; add a CAI and a muffler, and you better start looking at a Tremec.
