Message: Hate to break it to ya, but there are no cheap mods that will give you significantly-more power and better mileage at once.
1) Installing a 180-deg thermostat will help make a tiny bit more power (and help your engine live longer), but mileage will not improve.
2) Relocating the IAT sensor away from the engine (farther upstream in the intake stream) will help make a little more power (especially in warm/hot climates), but gas mileage will noticeably suffer.
3) Going to a less-restrictive muffler (like Dynomax) will help a tiny bit with power and maybe mileage, but it sure sounds nice. Dual exhaust (unless you use 1.25" plumbing) will hose your low-to-mid-RPM power (torque) and force you to live in higher-RPM ranges to get much of a power increase, which sucks lotsa gas and shortens engine life. Stick with the stock plumbing.
4) Using synthetic fluids in engine/tranny/diff will help a little with mileage and less with power, and extend drivetrain life.
5) Replacing your air filter plumbing (not just a drop-in element - the whole thing) with a K&N FIPK will help a little with both.
6) Keeping distributor/coil-equipped Daks well-tuned with solid-brass contact cap/rotor and better-than-OEM wires will help mileage a little (power is a ?). I have had good results with Bosch Platinum +4 plugs, too (although some here have different opinions).
7) Keep your front-end alignment up to spec - this helps with mileage.
8) Aftermarket throttle body - now this really wakes up your little 3.9, especially when all the above mods have been done (this is my latest mod). Power is definitely up (but still not near a V-8), and mileage might actually be better (I'm still evaluating).
9) Get a bed tonneau - this will help a little with mileage.
10) Replace the belt-driven rad fan with an electric one (Black Magic is preferred) - this will recover some power.
Click on my pic to see what I've done with my Dak - I'm getting happier with it as I go.
