Subject: How much HP can stock rods handle? IP: Logged
Message: I was thinking about putting in new pistons in my 5.9L. But I was looking at the price of connecting rods and they are a bit out of my budget right now. Will the stock rods handle the new pistons? Plans for the engine are headwork, modifying the intake manifold, headers, cam, intake, exhaust, gears and LSD. Thats about all my budget will allow right now. Any ideas?
Also, if anybody has replace their gears and want to get rid of the stock gears send me an email. I have 8.25 rear end with 3.23 gears and open differential.
Thanks
Dan

Message: Well I am no mechanic so please no flame throwing...
But I think stock rods can handle well over 400 HP. They are more vulnerable to being stretched and will suffer bearing failure at high RPMS. There again RPMS in excess of 6500+
I street raced a small block chevy in a trans am for many years stock rods.
Engine was roughly 385 HP and rev's hit 7000 RPM nearly every shift with no failure what so ever... but the speed shop stated I was at the edge.
Obviously every motor is different and therefore REV's & HP limits will certainly vary.
Bottom line is I think you are more than safe in your rebuild to stay the course with the stock rods.
Would be a good idea though to have them resized to insure everything is dead on. Also buy top quality bearings.

Message: I've ran 12.40s for 2 years in a Duster with 360 w/stock rods. Have the rotating assembly balanced. Stock rods are fine.

Message: I have a 1992 base model Dakota that came with 3.9L/5 speed. Found a used 5.9L for a good price and grabbed it. I am debating whether I want to put the pistons in now, or wait until next winter to do a complete performance build.
Thanks

Message: Well Dan, when you get that truck set up, it's gonna haul as$. Lower weight than the current generations bodies...
I'd find the corporate 9.25" rear and throw in a 3.92 LSD, and then do the Tremec 5 speed swap (or maybe a T-56 even). But that's just me.

Message: just put good rod bolts on and you will be fine, shot peened and balanced will help assemble run smooth if you want motor to last.

Message: I have an ax-15 tranny. I was told by professionals that as long as the casing isn't cracked, I can have that rebuilt to hold as much power as I want to give it. It means all the internals have to be replaced, but I am hoping I can find someone to do it cheap. As for the rearend, I am just going to buy a replacement. I can get a 9.25 with LSD for $250. It only has 3.55 gears but that price seems good. Is it?
Thanks

Message: holy god, i cant hook for sh1t even with posi...i bet that 360 is a nightmare with an open diff!!..as for the rods, when you take them out have them inspected for cracks and the like, retrofit some arp bolts in them, and you should be good to go. about the axle, go with the 3.92's...youll like em :)
