Subject: 3.90's or 4.10's??? IP: Logged
Message: I am going to change my gears to one of those ratios. What one would be best for me? Is there much of a drop in 1/4 times between either one? And what will each of those be running at about 75 MPH or how many more RPM's for each at 75 MPH? Thanks for the info.

Message: What will you be doing? Daily driver with occaisional towing? 3.92 is probably the way to go. If you want better acceleration and 1/4 times, or if you plan to tow real heavy loads the 4.10 might be what you want.
If you don't have a limited-slip diff, you should think seriously about putting one in while you're changing the R&P. There's nothing like having two wheels spinning! Seriously, LSD makes driving for any purpose or condition *much* better.
Go to www.4lo.com and use the grear, MPH, and tire calculators there. You will need to know all the grear ratios in your tranny (and transfer case if you are 4x4). After determining your tire diameter you can calculate the actual MPH you will attain at whatever RPM you desire.

Message: What trans do you have???
The difference between the 3.92 and the 4.10 gears are 108 rpms at 75mph and 90 rpms at 60(auto in od). Since they are so close I would go with which ever is cheaper for you. If you are looking for more launch get the 4.10s or 4.56s. If you have a stick I would get the 4.10s and not the 4.56s(doesn't have as much of an OD gear .75 vs. .69). Don't forget tire size plays a Big part in the overall gear ratio.
4.10s with 28" tire in auto OD @70mph= 2376rpms
4.56s with 32" tire in auto OD @70mph= 2312rpms

Message: Alright I have heard half of you say you have to change the speedo and the other half say you dont have to becuase the speedo sensor is in the wheels not the gearing. Now for those of you who know 100% please let me know. This would be those of you that have actually changed your gears or have had it done and didnt have to have the speedo changed...I have a 2000 dakota v6.

Message: the speed is sensored by the revolutions of the drive shaft, not the gears or wheels,a gear change will not effect your speedometer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
