Subject: Will V6 drivetrain hold up to 360 ?? IP: Logged
Message: I starting to plan a 5.9L swap into my 2002 V6. I was just wondering if I should plan on swapping the tranny and rear end, or would the drivetrain I have hold up. I'll probably swap the rear end sooner or later with something beefier and a limited slip. Also, if I need to get a new tranny, what other vehicles come with the 46RE ?? Any info is appreciated.

Message: in a 2002????????
why not just trade it in for a dak with a 360 in it? it would be cheaper IMO

Message: The 5.9L makes way to much torque for the V6 drive train. If you want to be very custom you could go to keisler automotive's web site and look into a T-56 6spd conversion. You'll need a larger radiator probably and a tougher rear end. Probably a 9.25 rear with an LSD and some 3.92 gears.

Message: Most of you may or may not know this but they put 8 1/4's behind 340's and 360's in 73 and 74 so I thinks its safe to say they can chandle a mild 360mag.
Also, the 42re is based off of the 904. A 904 with the proper parts inside can easily handle what a mild 360mag can put out and as a matter of fact if you want the fastest combination possible use the smallest lightest parts (A500, 42re or 904) to get the lightest possible reciprocating mass and you will be faster.
Hell a PowerGlide was NEVER meant to be behind a big block Chevy but thats the bracket racers choice (in street classes).

Message: I'm keeping mine (for now). Talk to Wayne at APS precision (apsprecision.com) about a torque converter that will hook the 360 up to the 42RE tranny. I bought 3.92s but they are 8.25". I've been told by long time racing guys that unless I drive the "snot" out of it, I should be okay.

Message: Another bit of advice for you folks.
You DO NOT need a special converter, you can reweld the weights on your 6 coverter, MP sells a kit with the template.
You will also get a pretty decent stall because the 6 converter will stall out higher with the added HP and TQ from an 8.
Keep in mind that this is for mild aplications only, you start getting wild with S/C's and N2O and all and you may grenade it.
I had a friend who had a very hot roller cam 340 in a mid 80's SB Dodge p/u, he had 225 shot of N2O and he was running a 904 (rebuilt with good components of course) and a slant six 904 converter for the higher stall.
That combo lasted him a whole racing season untill he finally dropped a BB in it.

Message: Generated torque is limited to available traction. Once the wheels break loose, torque goes to hell! A v6 truck spinning its wheels isn't generating any more torque than the same truck with a 360 spinning it's wheels. If you already have the same problems that I have breaking loose with my v6, then you won't be generating peak torque or hp often, least not without some r/t class rubber. The place where your drivetrain is going to be in trouble is on launches with good "hookup". The better the "hookup", the more torque you put to the ground. So, really, it depends what you do with your truck. There's guys on here with modded 4.7's with 5-spd's that have had no problems. And, the 5-spd in the 4.7 trucks is the same as the 3.9 trucks, NV3500. I say run it til it breaks, then you'll know!

Message: Hey thanks for the info. I am eventually planning to swap in a new tranny and rear end, but I just want to get this motor rebuilt and out of my garage. So aside from the torque converter, I shouldn't have any problems with things bolting up ?? Also does anyone know where I can get a 46RE without finding a wrecked R/T ??

Message: actually the v6 trucks carry AX-15s and the v8s carry NV3500s. I put a pretty decent 318 in my Dakota with the v6 AX-15 and its holding up good. Don't think it would take slicks but for street I like it

Message: to simply ans. the original Q NO. there is a reason that the V6 and V8 trannies are different.years ago I usta watch guys do heavy mods on a V8 and then wonder why the tranny was in pcs. on the street a day or two later. Same thing applies here. Can you do it ? yes. Would anyone but an idiot actually do it? No

Message: I have had a 360 in front of an A500 and a 8 1/4 for a couple months now without any problems in my 93 4x4 Dak. I did however, put a shift kit in the trans and put a larger trans cooler at the same time I did the swap. I am still using the 3.9 converter without problems. The trans bangs hard in all the gears when it shifts and shows no signs of giving up anytime soon. As far as a 46re, a durango or a fullsize pick-up trans will work just the same.

Message: Carter,
My manual for my 2000 4x4 cc says NV3500 for 4.7 and 3.9. I believe it said NV2500 for 4 cyl, or something other than NV3500. Think about it, the peak torque on the 3.9 is in the mid-200's.

Message: 904 is the original light duty 3 speed that the 42re 4 speed auto is based on (46re is based on the heavier duty 727 3speed auto). Trust FazDak when he tells you a well built lighter duty tranny is the hot ticket; probably about 5% less parasitic loss than the heavier duty models. Good luck !

Message: Lesley and carolina, Im at the office at the moment. Tonight I will gather up part #;s and post em here for you. One of these part #'s I have installed myself and can tell you they work.
Just remeber though, a V6 converter does not have as heavy as parts inside as the V8 ones do. I have noticed that 6 converters lend themselfs well to high HP at high RPM engines more than high torque aplications.
Like I said, they should be able to handle a "mild 360"
