Subject: No Low End IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 3.9L V6 with no cat (bought it that way) It just really feels like it has no low end what so ever. If I stomp on it, it will go real well if it revs up to 3 grand then it will go. But absolutly no bottom end. I think that this may have to do with the fact that it has no cat, because of reduced back pressure, is there any way that I can fix this without putting a cat on?
Thanks

Message: A smaller diameter tailpipe will give you more low end but less top end. Everything is a trade off.

Message: Do you have a cold air intake? Anything besides the exhaust? Also, are you handling the loss of an oxygen sensor with a Catbox?

Message: My check engine light is on, I think I do need a new o2 sensor. I don't have any other mods done to it. I just bought the truck. Took it to get it looked at and they told me it didn't have a cat. Will a air intake help me low end?

Message: Todd's got a point, open the exaust and keep a squeezed intake and that can be the result.

Message: Get a Cat box first, this way you can reset your PCM by unplugging your battery and turning on your ignition. That way you would get rid of the check engine light and keep your fuel/air mixture correct. Incorrect O2 sensor readings can really hinder performance. If you live in a state with inspections, then you could always buy a generic cat and have it wielded back in, that way no cat box would be needed and no more check engine light.

Message: Your computer expects there to be a Sensor in front of and behind the Cat, so it can tell if the Cat is working. If the two readings don't indicate that the Cat is working, it's going to throw off an error code and the computer is going to go into 'limp home' mode, which -seriously- effects performance.
A Cat-Box is a little electronic gizmo that replaces one of the sensors and tricks the engine into thinking there is a Cat installed.
Definatly get or make an intake! I'd also recommend looking into going to NAPA and getting a Brass Contact Cap/Rotor, new Spark Plugs (Autolite 3923s worked for me), new wires and a 180 T-stat. Chances are you've got more than 25000 miles, and the stock aluminium Cap/Rotor contacts go to -crap- by then. :)
I used to live in Michigan, and I do have some news... it is technically illegal in Michigan to drive a vehicle that is -supposed- to have a Cat without one. That said... I don't think anyone up there enforces that law. :)

Message: I know its illegal. I just bought the truck, and the mechanic informed me of that. So I'm holding the car lot responsible. Where can I get a cat box, and how much are they? Thanks

Here ya go... not exactly cheap, but cheaper than buying a cat and putting it in.
