Subject: 4.10 vs. 4.56 IP: Logged
Message: I see a lot of you guys talking about changing the gears in your trucks. I have a 99 R/T and would like to know how do you figure out which gear is better for you? What do you base your decision on when choosing 4.10 or 4.56 gears?
Thanks for your replys.

Message: 4.10 gears are so close to the 3.92 (stock gear) you won't notice much of a difference in performance. The reason most RTs go with the 4.56 gear is cause they give you a very noticable gain in performance. No sense in spending $200-300 on gears, plus another $200-400 in installation cost for something that is hard to notice. Right?
I have yet to hear anyone regret buying/installing the 4.56 gears, they usuelly praise them as being one of the (if not the) most noticable modification done.
However if you have to do more then 50% of your driving on the highway at speeds above 75mph you may want to stick with the stock gears. Take if for what it's worth but it's all or nothing with the gear changes, stock or 4.56. No sense in the 4.10s unless you have the 3.55 gears now (which you don't).

Message: I just got my 4.56's yesterday from Randy's, which is the site mentioned above. I bought his house brand called "Yukon". The gears were $187 and he threw in the mini install kit for free. The mini kit is for those who have low milage when there is no need to replace bearings, otherwise the re-build kit with all the bearings included is about $70 bucks. I'll keep everyone posted on my opinion of the difference between stock 3.92's and the 4.56's after I get them installed in my 2002 R/T next week. But like R/Truck says, everyone claims its an awsome improvement.

Message: You guys should read a post a couple of weeks ago called '9.85 in the 1/8'???' Guy was disappointed and me and others told him why. Gears alone will in most cases not improve times, just seat of the pants feel.

Message: I bought the 4.10 gears for my CC R/T. Reason was I had just bought a new pair of 26" slicks and wasn't about to lose money on them, plus I am currently running 1" shorter than stock tires on my truck which only increases the gear ratio more. So I went with the 4.10's when combined with the 26" slicks give me a 4.4x at the track, and with the 27" tires gives me an effective 4.18 on the street. I wasn't looking for huge gains, and put too many miles on my truck(had 120K on my '99 when I wrecked it in Oct) to want the tall 4.56 gears. I've put over 6K on my new truck since I bought it in middle of Dec.

Message: Aaron: did you notice a big difference in low end and quickness with the 4.56's over the stock gears?
HSKR: were the 4.10's noticable ?, I wanted 4.10's but everyone says its not enough difference.

Message: Think of it this way:
3.92 gears = stock gear
4.10 gears = 5% lower gear
4.56 gears = 15% lower gear
You think a 5% gain is noticable? 15% gain is probably real noticable.

Message: Haven't actually gotten them installed yet. Was waiting to get some track times to see the difference. Will let everyone know when they get installed, but I am running shorter than factory tires so the difference will be bigger than other Dakotas.

Message: Hey Tex, I looked real quick at some time slips and it seems I was able to cut off about 1/10 off of my 60' times. I run MT ET Streets, and they seem to give me a good bite. I also got pulled over for careless driving, after having them installed, for accidentally lighting up the tires at a stop light.

Message: Aaron ... what size MTs are you running and do you know approx. what rpms you hitting when going through the traps?
I'm getting 4.56s in soon and will be running with the 26" MTs the first time out this season. My peak hp is now at 5800 rpms hence the need for 4.56s gears as my previous combo. of 3.92 and 26" drag tires had me crossing the line at 5000 to 5200 rpms depending upon track/weather conditions. Thanks for any info.

Message: With the 4.56 you may need to buy some 28" slicks or might need to shift into OD before you cross the traps unless you have stiffer valve springs and lifters than can handle the higher RPMs. Me having a brand new set of 26" slicks is the reason I went with the 4.10 gears.

Message: HSKR ... I do have a new set of 28" BFG drag radials. My calculations have me crossing the line between 5400 to 5500 rpms with the 28" tires and 5800 to 5900 rpms with the 26" tires. My valvetrain components have been beefed up to go low 6000 rpms before valve float. My MP PCM has a 6000 rpm rev limiter but it does move a couple of rpms depending on conditions. I was just wondering if Aaron had any real world feedback as the rev limiter is what I'm most worried about. Thanks.

Message: I run 26" Hoosiers with a 4.10 gear. Cross the line at about 5800 revs or so. The rev limiter will kick in just after the down track if I stay in it. That is the whole idea with gearing... Use all the engine you have...

Message: Great, so I know I can go out the gate with the 26" slicks and 4.10's now. What pressure do you run in your Hoosiers?? I experimented a little ate the track, but couldn't figure out a good setting. I have 26x11.5 QTPs on 15x10 rims.
