Subject: exhaust/intake suggestions? IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a 5.2 '97 dak, and I'm new to these engines, and have learned a lot by reading these forums already. I just wanted to get some feedback on what kind of exhaust and intake I should go with now. I want to keep my cost on mods to a minimum but still get decent hp and some mpg gains. Could someone tell me about what it would cost and what the gains would be for just a single high flow muffler, both with dual and single outs, and how much difference it would be for each set up in hp, torque, and price. Also, is a complete intake system really necessary or does just a drop in K&N filter into the factory air box do just about as much? Like a said before, keep in mind I can't afford to spend a whole lot of money right now, as I'm paying off the truck itself. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Message: jon, a drop in k&n will do about nothing. look around for stuff for sale. u want a cold air intake. as for exhaust its really personal preferance. duel, single, any muffler is gonna make about the same hp. a straight through muff is a straight through muff. its all in the headers and the kitty...

Message: todd,
for a home-made intake like you suggest, should i just use a cone k&n filter and place that up where the factory intake comes in by the fender and then do i need anything extra to attach it to the intake manifold or should i just fit the dryer hose to the thing at the top of the intake manifold? also, how do i support the whole system? and should i try to get a heat shield for it also, and if so, would it be better (or even possible) to just buy a heat shield or make one, and if so, out of what? keep in mind i've never done anything like this before and i don't know a whole lot about doing engine mods myself. thanks
