Subject: Questions about Cali IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys, got a few questions for you people over in California. I'm probally going to be moving out there in a few months...
Anyway, I've been kicking around the idea of buying a '98-'00 Dakota Club-Cab stick (4-Cyl) and ripping the engine/tranny out to replace it with a 5.7L and a Viper Tranny. Yes, I know it'll be difficult and expensive, but it'll be a lot of fun :)
Question is, whats the deal with the California emmisions laws? I know where I used to live, Michigan, you could put an engine into a vehicle that was older than it, but not an older engine into a newer vehicle... well, you could, but they kind of frowned on it. Since California is more strict, I'm wondering if you are even allowed to put an engine into a vehicle if it was not offered as an option on that vehicle? I'd probally keep the emissions stuff intact, albiet with a high-flow Cat and different exhaust/intake. The majority of the mods would be engine-internal, such as lighter rods/pistons, cam, and mild head work (I'm assuming by the time I can afford this, options will be available).
So, now that I've rambled on for several paragraphs... anyone know if California law allows this?

(I put a 73' 400M into a 66 Galaxie before the
smog laws last changed)
The law as I understand it is basically that
in California they'll let you put a different engine from the same manufacturer in . . . IF YOU HAVE ALL THE EMISSIONS EQUIPMENT from the original vehicle which it came from.
So, I think you could do your swap in Cali, but
you'll difinately have to take it through a Bureau of Automitive Repair Judging Station.
The best thing for you to do (you may get a LOT
of runaround though) is for you to contact the
California Burea of Automitive Repair.

I called them a while back. Contrary to beliefs they arent against people modifying their cars they jsut want it done so its clean burning. They told me that I can install a motor in a truck as long as the motor is designed for a NEWER car than mine ( so I could install a HEMI in my 2000 dakota) and also it HAS TO have ALL the smog equipment that the siad engine would come in the normal truck its supposed to be installed in.
So you could put the Viper motor in it but you have to keep all the smog and everything

Nah, no Viper Motor. Too expensive :) Probally not a Viper Tranny either, just something 6-speed with a nice solid shift to it...
I would wait for it to come out in a stock truck, but... well, I'm not liking some of the concepts I'm seeing, and it doesn't look like it'll be before 2005 or 2006 anyway. I've always liked working on cars, so I was going to do it as a project... actually, if I start in 2004 I'll probally have it done in 2006... but it will be done the way I want it. There is something about being able to point to it and saying, "I did that".
Where? Probally San Jose area, not sure yet. Depends on where I get a job, could be up in Redmond. Heck, may not even be in California, but that seems to be where the highest concentration of companies is. Speaking of which, I'm going to be in San Jose in March for GDC, know any good resturants near the Conference Center?
