Message: Howdy Matt!
Well, there are a few ways to get your Dodge to perform better.
Cover the bed. This can improve your aerodynamics, which will result in noticable gains in MPG.
Tune it up! Make sure you change out cap, rotor, plugs, and wires at regular intervals. The stock system is great, but needs replacement @ approximately every 30,000-depending on your driving conditions may be sooner or later.
Oil---Synthetic oils will typically yeild small gains in MPG. (engine, tranny, and diff)
Improved airflow helps as well...AEM makes a good intake for our pickups that increases power across the entire powerband (not just peak) and this will improve gas milage. Check out the Brute Force line of intakes at www.aempower.com
All of these small improvements will add up to $$$ saved in fuel in the long run.
Hope this helps!
Ryan

Message: 1. Cold air intake
2. headers and cat back exhaust with high flow cat
3. electric fan (good for 2-3 mpg)
4. MSD 6A, good wires, accel cap and rotor
I have a similat setup w/o the electric fan and can get 17.5-18.5mpg on the freeway with my 5.2 auto and 3.92 gears.

Message: 2-3 mpg removing fan is a myth. I saw NO improvement in mileage from removing the fan on my 97 5.2 CC. Smoother and quieter, yes, mileage improvement, no. I also have Mopar Performance headers and y-pipe, DynoMax catback, Dynomax high-flow cat, K&N filter, MSD 8.5 mm plug wires, 3923 plugs, brass cap and rotor, Accel coil, and new O2 sensors. My mileage runs about 16-17 mpg... same as before all the mods.

Message: A lot of the fan mileage depends on the season and where you live... in So. Cal summers where it is 100-115 the stock fan drags a bunch, My buddy that had an r/t got 2-3mpg around town and 1-2 on the freeway. all depends on how much your stock fan in engaged.

Message: You could always buy a Geo Metro for better gas mileage. Or just keep it below 3000RPMs at all times.

i am looking into buying a gas powered scooter to scoot back and forth to work when the gas prices go into the $2+ range
rought66, did you notice any improvement in HP when you did the fan? and does it rev faster?
