Subject: Higher Stall TQ Converter IP: Logged
Message: I noticed on a parts website that the MOPAR converter shows a stall speed of 1800 to 2200, is this a range or are they available in different stalls. Also, what is the stall speed on the stock converter and what speed should I upgrade to compliment my 4.56's ?
2002 RC R/T: PaceSetter Air Induction, self-ported 50mm TB, Harland Sharp 1.7 RR's, Autolite 3923's, MOPAR Wires, Borg Warner Cap, Gibson exhaust, Yukon 4.56's, and the totally useless $550 B&G "Flash".

Message: The stall depends on the motor and vihicle.. it could be from 1900-2200... if you are going to go through the trouble of changing the converter talk to Wayne at www.apsprecision.com he will build you a converter with the correct stall for your setup, it will have a higher torque muliplication for better launches, and is fully brazed and welded... he is the best dodge tranny guy I have found.

Message: The more hp and torque you run to the converter, the higher stall speed you will get. so a mild 360 will have a lower stall speed, but if you run more power to it with the same converter, it will stall at a higher rate.

Message: Check with Dan at www.thefastman.com about stalls too. I talked to him a while back about them. He said he opened a Mopar stall and a regular Dodge convertor. The onlt difference was that the Mopar fins had been bent a little to slow the fluid lockup. Nothing else. Same clutches and such as a stock convertor.
If I recall correctly, he offers a better stall with heavy clutches and such for around $250 as opposed to the Mopar around $180. If it's what he says, I'd be willing to spend the extra $70.

Message: Lower gears will lessen the need for a high stall converter. Usually its going to a hotter cam that makes you need the high stall. If you don't need it, you're just adding heat to your transmission for no good reason.
