The best bang for the buck for me has been the Hypertech PPIII. This was the only mod I have done so far where I could really feel a difference. I have put Autolites, cold air intake, S-bolt etc...I am sure they all work together, but until I bought the PPIII, it all felt the same.

4.56 gears (probably the most wow factor)

Combination of these together (M1 2bbl, Mopar PCM / Custom Flash, 50 or 52mm Throttle Body, Headers & exhuast)

Cold Air Intake (The starting point of any truck)

Mopar PCM since you have a 2000MY and a mild cam!
Don't get the Mopar R/T Cam. KRC206 cam is nice.

If youve got about $3,000 to $4,000 you might reach the 300hp with bolt on mods, unless you plan on Nitrous or a supercharger.

You should start with: K&N FIPK or Volant Air intake ($250), M1 intake manifold ($300+install), F&B throttle body ($400), 1.7 roller rockers ($400+install), ProPerformance Headers ($425+install), cut out all cats and go to 3 inch pipe ($300), magnaflow, gibson, flowmaster, or spintech muffler ($100+install), and MOPAR performance PCM or custom PCM flash ($300 to $600).

Given that the avg $/HP is about $30 ... you can realistically figure about $1500 to reach you're goal comfortably.

MP PCM - @350
52MM TB - @350
Air Intake - @100(HomeMade)
1.7 Rockers - @600
My advice - @100(Just to make it to 1500 even)

Good luck.

I think he only wants 300 at the crank from what he describes. If you want it at the wheels....just go with a S/C and that will get you there. Unfortunately, that is about 4K though.
Anything above and beyond that would just be iceing on the cake.

50 HP should be easy! I'd say:
Remove the clutch fan: FREE, 7 hp
relocate the IAT and get a cold air kit with heat shield: $150, 7 hp
MP PCM and 180 degree t-stat: $360, 15hp
MP headers, no cat: $425, 20hp
That's under $1000 but N2O would give even more and cost even less. The 4.56 gears effectively give you an extra 40 hp just through leverage and they only cost about $600 installed. Lots of other stiff listed is good but you have to work in stages so everything works together. The new M1 is awesome, but really needs some of the other mods to go with it. You wouldn't put 1.7 rockers AND a high lift cam but both accomplish the same goal (the cam actually is cheaper if you do your own work.) The TB needs attention if you open up the rest of the intake and exhaust. All the stuff texaslawdog mentioned would probably give over 100 hp and you still haven't touched the heads. KRC has that lightning killer package for $4000 that makes at least 320 HP to the wheels on the stock shortblock all motor. That's about 140 hp more then stock, and about what a Lightning puts to the wheels but it weighs more.

Isn't rwhp a lot more important than hp at the flywheel? I'm just saying that you want as much power to the wheels as you can get right?

Also, anyone know where I can get a cam for a 2001 R/T? Seems like I can only find them for 2000 and older. Thanks:)

rwhp has to come from the crank. so it doesnt matter. the more you add at the crank the more goes to the rw. there is no such thing as just pure rw. it all has to start at the crank. either adding or freeing up.

guys let me know i just my 2000 RT 5.9 and i want to know what works best!!

Drop some 4.56 gears in the rear-end and you can skip about half of the stuff thats been mentioned. It doesn't give you any hp gain, but it feels like you added 50+ hp......It will be our little secret.

Most people will talk rear wheel HP because it's not easy to measure Crank HP once you have the motor installed in the truck. Any modified crank HP number somebody telss you is just a guess based on what they got at the rear wheels. There are also a couple of different ways to measure rear wheel horsepower and the one most people use will show a HP gain from something like lightweight wheels. lightweight wheels obviously don't add HP but they do improve acceleration and that accelerates the drum faster and the machine picks that up as HP. Still as long as conditions are similar, however you measure hp it's a good way to see if something is helping or not. But you need to take the stock truck to the rear wheel dyno first to see where you are starting from, the R/Ts vary quite a bit, probably within a 20 HP range. If you do a mod and then get the dyno it may have helped even though you still have a simlar hp number as somebody eles' truck was stock.

I still say throwing in a cam with a Mopar PCM will put you around 300hp easy! From there, every bolt on is like adding fuel to the fire.

Most R/T's push around 200-210rwhp that's around 260hp crank, add a cam for another 30hp crank for a total of 290 crank with another 10hp from the PCM gets you 300hp at the least! I've seen 40 to 50hp on some wild cams, plus 20-30hp on a PCM if it's a death flashed.

Forget about all the small crap, headers, TB, Air systems. That will nickel & dime you to death, without much hp increase.

I felt the biggest gains from :

M1
headers
K&N FIPK

in that order.

Didnt do much:
52 mm TB
MP PCM
Gibson cat back
hi flow cat
autolites / brass cap / rotor

so about $1000 for the good ones.

Intakes manifolds only moves the horsepower band up or down while either hindering or increasing efficiency power peak marginally.

Only things that will give you the best of both worlds are VARIABLE PARTS. Honda's VTEC/ITEC whatever, I think Mercedes has a variable intake too :) Or Saabs variable crankshaft degree tech, that way it can increase boost to 25 psi or more in second gear.

The difference between the stock cam & a stock intake is, a cam & pcm has way more effect on pollution emissions, thus making it the target of a non-performing part in the non efficient 5.9L engine.

Say peak Horsepower comes at 4400@250hp stock rated power. You only need 343.75 CFM flow thru out the system. Not much! Hell the Stock TB handles 690cfm? So why spend money of opening up the exhaust or intake when the cam can't open the valves much. 410 lift?

VAF = (CI/1728) x (RPM/2) x VE,
VAF = (L/28.328) x (RPM/2) x VE.

Now then I must ask...Is a cam swap doable for someone that has never done it before? How much time and effort is involved would you say?

Anthony STILL doesnt like M1 intakes.

I knocked off 3 tenths with mine and 1/2 tenth in the 60`. Low end torque is still there. 99% of the people here say the M1 is a great mod.

Its dyno proven they increase HP (at high rpms), period.

The best thing about the 5.9 is that it's so choked up from the factory that just about anything helps! Compare that to motors that are built to the gills from the factory, where you really have to pick and chose or you will lose power.

Yes a cam install is not the easiest thing to do, that's why it works so well.

I know lots of people might disagree with my view's, but don't knock it unless you tried everything I have. Sure I haven't even come close to some of the other owners here with bored out 409's and NOS with Superchargers. But I've gone as far as replacing every single item from the block up. I just need to invest some time and money and get me another dyno test to show you what I'm talking about.
