Subject: Robert Shaw Thermostat Type ? IP: Logged
Message: I've done a search on this already.
...I installed a Robert Shaw 330-180, one week later and the operating temperature for the
truck seems to be OK, always warms up to where
the needle is just to the right of the first
tick mark (much cooler than before). This morning was pretty cold (high 40's to low 50's ?) and it never got past half way between the zero mark and
the first tick, it threw P1281 code.
I see that everyone is using the RS 755-180 T-Stat. I (doh!) purchased the 330-180 based on
what the guy at the parts counter said.
Does the 330-180 flow more than the 755-180 ?
Could this be why I'm running too cold ?
(assuming that my coolant level is correct and
that my T-Stat is not stuck open)
Comments ? Suggestions ??
Thanks All !

Message: Around turkey day, I was traveling @night, in my 4.7 yadda, yadda, Quad with the family. That night the ambient was about 30F. I have the 755-180 (bernd told me the one to get), and for the first time, it fell below the first tick as you say. Never has since though, and I don't have the belt clutch/fan. But, I don't know the answer to your question, just bored here at work, at least it won't hurt the engine. I don't know what the difference in these stats are though.

Message: Flow would have nothing to do with it running too cold. Flow could cause it to run hot. A thermostat only sets the lower limit. As the temp approaches its setpoint it begins to open. With a 180 it begins to open at 185 and is fully open by 190. Flow is now going through your radiator and the ultimate temperature of the coolant will depend on the ambient conditions and the effectiveness of your cooling system to remove heat. If the temp of the coolant were to drop, the thermostat will begin closing at 180 and be shut around 175.

Message: I have been using mine in below 0F, 755-180 (I think), Not a problem yet. Think I will carry some carboard if I do highway trips when it is that cold.
