Subject: 5.2L HEADS CRACKED! OPINIONS PLEASE!
IP: Logged

Message:
Took my 5.2L heads to the local shop to get a 3 angle valve job, they called me and said both heads had cracks between the intake and exhaust seats and were no good. The engine was not giving any problems, I just pulled the heads to replace the seals and change the springs. Do these small cracks hurt anything? Can I still use the heads?? I seem to remember the same problems occuring on some other types of heads and the general opinion was they would not hurt anything. Opinions please!

My only experience with a crack head was on my 87GTA, I was having my valves replace due to oil leaking down the stems and puffing smoke at startup. It's been some time, but they used some kind of metallic stuff and it showed the crack.

Before replacing the heads, it use to idle OK. After replacing the heads with MY88 heads :) It ran like a champ. Anything cracked can't be good, so if you plan on spending all the time & money already, might as well do it right and get some good heads.

It's a common problem with the stock heads. Mine had 5 out of 8 cyl cracked between the valves... I was using a tad of water, and had 2 green spark plugs upon inspection. I went with the RT 1.92 heads, got 2 heads in the garage now that are as good as boat anchors now.

Why are your heads needing replacement?
You must have some major abuse or milage on them huh?

Before you took them off did you do a leak down test?....I hope so. If so, that will tell you how bad they were. And even if they are bad you can weld them up. Just curious why did you take them off....for performance, or tuning, or what...seems like a lot of work so soon on a 97.

Replace them now while you have them off. Stock Magnum heads seem to crack like that pretty regularly. You're lucky you didn't find it out the hard way.

There is no good repair for cracked heads except replace them. Only bad things can happen if you try any repair for it will fail and you'll get a crankcase full of water. If you get used heads, have them magnafluxed. Might opt for an M1 manifold while she's apart too. At least a new bellypan and gasket. Good luck

Problem solved, found a set of heads (fully ported no less) at a local swap meet. Had them magnafluxed and they look good! My truck had 82K on it and it was dry, no water in the cylinders or evidence of water. The cracks were very small between the seats. The reason the heads were off to begin with was to change the springs and "freshen them up". Yes I'm going with the M-1 and also the KRC206X cam along with PPH headers. I'll post the results when complete!!
