Subject: R/T rims

Not sure which forum to ask this, but . . .
If I were to acquire some R/T rims for my 02 quad cab, what are the positives? I just traded in my Camaro for the truck. With the car I had put the 17" rims and sport springs, and it felt like riding on train rails. The truck is obviously smoother, which I prefer as a driver. What size tires go on the R/T rims, and is it possible to get the speedo recalibrated at a dealership, or somewhere else? I have 02 4.7 2WD. Thanks.

Wow...talk about spooky. I just did the same thing mast month. I got rid of my 96 Z28 and got an 02 4.7L 2WD Quad. No offense to the F-Bodies out there but I got tired of shoe-horning myself in the car and using a can opener to get out. Dang fast though. I went with the 17's on my Z too.

From what I've read, the 17X9 R/T rims will take the same 275/40's that our Z's had. Pesonally I'm looking for some 11's to strap 315 rubber around.

Yeah, three foot doors make it kind of hard to get out of sometimes. But, I'd like to hear some pros/cons of getting the 17s. I've currently got the 16x8. Does the extra height of the rubber make the ride softer? Thanks.

It does make a difference when you have more sidewall on the tire. Usually the more the smoother because the greater volume of air. I guess it also depends on the type of tire you get as well. I went from the 16X8's (stock) to the 17X9's (RT Wheels, with 275's they are great for traction)to the 18X8.5's (KMC Venoms). Yes it gets a little rougher. Not intolerable though. New shocks would probably help though. Oh and I don't think that the tire size matters any more on the speedo for some reason. Mine has stayed the same throughout all changes (even gear changes). It is still right on it. Hope that helps.

The factory R/T wheels come with 255/55/R17 Goodyear RSA rubber. Thats what I went with when I bought my R/T rims for my quad. It handles much better with the wider tires and gets much better wet traction. I think I'll look for a different tire next time.

Z-Tube, R/T Rims, SSB Rear Disc Conversion, Alpine Head-Unit, Infinity Kappa Speakers, SilverStar Headlights, HO Cams & Intake installed.

Got H.O. ?

Are the R/T rims 9" wide? I've seen two different sizes, the 255 and the 275. Is the tread width wide enough for the rim? Anybody have pics of the wheel with both size tires? Thanks in advance.

JustGotOne, I'm in the same boat as you are right now. I'm trying to research before I buy, so I've heard just about everything on this subject. As Michael stated, the RT wheels come stock with the 255/55R17 tire. Physically, this tire is so close in outer diameter to the 255/65R16 tires that are stock on the 16X8 rims, that no recalibration is needed. The tread is the same width between the two tire sizes, but the sidewall is shorter on the 17". This may increase harshness VERY little, but your handling will get better. The r/t wheel is a 17X9, but the 255 tire fits great on it. No extreme sidewall bulge, yet it doesn't look skinny. I can truly say that the R/T wheels look at home on the quad cab. So anyways, I hope I helped a little bit. Good luck on the desision. Be sure to post some pics when you get the wheels. Happy new year everyone.

Yup. all of the Gen 3 Dakotas (97-up) have the same bolt pattern and backspace requirements. Unless they have been modified from stock, but thats a whole 'nother ball of wax.

FYI:

If you order the R/T rims from the Mopar Accessories Catalog, you can get the painted ones for $120 each, and I believe the chromes are around $200 each. Ordering the R/T rim as a parts replacement will cost a whole lot more so be careful how they ring them up.

Sin, are you saying the R/T wheels can be bought for $120 new?? Please tell me where.
Ive checked with a local discount Dodge source and the best I could do was $275 per wheel PLUS $22 for the lug nut cover.
Thanks in advance!!~

I don't know the part numbers but as SinCity said, make sure the are looking at the "accessroy" parts numbers. I'm not sure what the catalog description may be but the wheel is the same physicaly as the R/T wheel. The wheel should list for 160 but they may sell cheeper. DO NOT look under the the Dakota/Durango replacemet wheel part number. That is the expensive part.

I don't know the part numbers right off hand, but the catalog you want to look at is the "Mopar Accessories Catalog" for the Dodge Dakota/Durango. This is a small (12-18) page full-color accessories catalog that is supposed to be displayed at every Dodge dealership. To get the cheaper price, you must order the part # of the rims from the catalog, not Daimler-Chrysler's service replacement. Dealerships markup the hell out of service parts so I've heard of quotes up to $500 per rim if you order it over the counter, but I've seen them as low as $125 from the catalog.

I believe the catalog quotes them as $160 ea retail but some dealerships will discount the prices that are quoted in the catalogs.

Good to know about the "Mopar Accesories Catalog", the price that my dealer quoted me was more expensive than it would have been to go with the 20x9 R/T replicas! Didn't sound right to me...

As said before - the 17" rims with the low profile tires are the same height as the stockers. The reason the gear change didn't affect your speedometer Smittyt2 is that our trucks take speed from the axle which is after the gears. Here are your part #'s:
82205902 - 17"x9", 5-Spoke R/T style, chrome plated, w/Ram's Head logo center caps $275.00

You guy's can look up all the Mopar accessories at

I recently bought a set of 5 on ebay with center caps and lugs for 450 plus shipping, ended up being about 500 dollars. I put them on my 98 dakota without any probs what so ever. I was looking for them as you are and people told me you could get those rims for 120 a piece at the dealer, and I went to 3 dealerships the parts guys laughed at me when I told them that price. They offer those prices to dealers and retailers only from what I have heard, walk in parts prices are always more expensive. If you want brand new wheels, I would suggest contacting someone who has an account with Dodge and have them get the qoute, I would bet you would get lower prices from them. BTW I put 255/50/Z17 G-Force TA BFG's on the rims and I have never had such a good tire. I would highly recommend them, and to top it off I got them for 125 a piece after road hazzrd, balance, and stem at Discount tire co.

Okay, got some rims on their way, what's a good tire to use? I've a 4x2 model, will probably be doing 98% highway driving, what's a good highway terrain tire for the rims? I'm not looking for Z-rated rubber, as I doubt I'll ever fully use them to the max. Just some good ones that look good and ride good. Thanks again. This thread has been most useful.
