Subject: new intake / mileage IP: Logged
Message: Just installed the home-maid intake version with a 7" K&N cone filter on my 2000 4.7,auto,4x4. Took it on a 150 mile hwy trip with some hills and if anything seemed to lose a little power down low, and the gas mileage got worse by 2 mpg (avg.14.2) Just wondering if I need to reset the computer to see any changes? The exhaust is still stock as I decide which muffler to go with, but just don't know why mileage got worse. Any ideas?

Message: If you're getting more air into the engine, the computer will add more gas to keep the air/fuel mixture corrected. There ain't no Santa Claus. More HP usually means more fuel.

Message: Drove the same as always as I make that same drive often. I was under the impression that the new intake would help increase my mileage. If I add a higher flow muffler like maganaflow or flowmaster would that couple with the intake to get better mileage? At this point all I did was make the truck sound meaner with the intake, but gave up fuel economy that I didn't have to spare.

Message: Hi,
I bought a '00 4.7 SLT, CC, auto with the 3.55 new in Oct '00, year end close out.
I normally got bout 16-18 MPG mixed driving.
I installed a Flowmaster SUV Perf muffler 3 in and 3 out,(factory 1 cat).
I did lose some bottom end but it felt as tho it helped in mid range. I then made my own air intake using PVC and Fernco fittings and that really helped the 4.7. Bottom and mid range woke up.
MPG has improved from 18 freeway to more that 20 and I have got as much as 22 when I can run 80 or better for extended periods of time (on vacation this last August, AC running like hell)and I might add with my Harley in the bed!
note: when making your homemade air intake system, insulate the PVC pipe with an insulating aluminum tape (the type you can use for your water pipes in winter)if you do a lot of city driving.
I have 41k miles on the Dak and she still has the original plugs.
Damn good truck is all I have to say!

Message: RMJ,
If your choosing between a flow master or a magnaflow, go with the magnaflow. I had that same decision to make about a month ago and asked around to find out that the flowmasters fall apart and aren't life time warrentied. The magnaflow is. That's what I had put on my truck, and I had it dumped right after the muffler (turn downs). It sounds great!!! A little cab noise but nothing compared to the noise a flowmaster would have inside the cab being that it's dumped under the truck. I don't want to have to scream at the person sitting next to me so they can hear me. As far as the mileage goes, I'm having nitroussteve fab me up a cold air intake right now, and I'll let you know if ther're any improvements with it.

Message: I installed the flowmaster 50 series delta flow and love it. I noticed a small gain in mileage and it has a nice deep tone. Not sure about how good Magnaflows are, but am very happy with my Flowmaster.
