i've got a 02 dak with the 4.7 and tow package, 3.92 rear i am guessing, and i get really sh|tty gas mileage, i was wondering if i were to swap out my gears with a high ratio set, if i would gain a HUGE increase in gas mileage, i know i will lose in torque but i never tow, and i never race, plus i do ALOT of driving on the interstate in the 80-100 range, any advice?

a 3.55 rear end will help a little but your probably only going to gain 1-3mpg with it on the highway. If it's worth spending a few hundred dollers to save a few bucks a month in gas then go for it.

You can probably switch someone for a set of 3.55s easily. Only gotta pay for shipping here and the time invloved in the trade.

However, you will probably need new bearings and possibly (prefferably?) a new crush sleeve.

So you have to include the cost of these new parts. It could run you up 80 dollars at the most.

It's going to kill half a day of your time.
So we have:

extra parts + install time + trade time/buying time = actual total cost

You wont be saving, like R/Truck said, but a couple buck a month at the most.

To make up the difference in all the time, effort and money you would put into getting new gears only to save money, it would take years to equal out and start being benifical to you.

It would take even longer if you had to pay a shop to put it in.

You make a huge difference in mpg you would need to go down to maybe a 2.71 or 2.94. However, you would have to buy those costing you more money. I doubt you would be able to find those used.

I'm sorry to say, you're SOL, but ya got to admit, the 3.92s are fun! Aren't they? The 3.92s will probably sell better too.

Pistolero, it's most likely he has the 9.25. However, they still make a ring and pinon for this axle in 2.71 and 2.94 sizes!

People spend the money to get a lower gear because they have a bigger fun factor to them. I don't know how much fun driving on the highway can be.

Maybe with the money you would otherwise put into getting new gears, you can increae mpg other ways.
