Message: I have a 93' and the info that I have found to help off the line power:
1)3.92 and up gears
2)higher stall torque converter example mopar 2400 unit
3)1.7RR or a aftermarket cam with a quicker lifting rate
4)The mopar computer that YA brought up is said to add up to "24hp/25TQ" from pg.52 4wheel&off road oct 95'.
5)power adder-nitrous, supercharger
Most mods extend the powerband up the rpm range(add horses not really torque) so gears will help the most for the least amount of effort/$$$. About how much more do you want, and what have you done so far? The other question you need to ask yourself is "How much do I want to spend?

Message: I have a '97 5.2 . The first steps I did to improve power made tons of bottom end. K&N , JBA shorty headers , ported 50mm TB , MSD blaster 3 coil , wires , Autolite 3923 plugs , mopar PCM , Black Magic 150 fan , under drive crank pulley , Dyno Max "Ultra-Flo" cat back. After these mods I had no choice but to add a shift kit and a trac-loc diff!!!! I can spin two 255/55/16 Pirelli Scorpion Zero's at will & pull a 2.12 sec 60 ft time . My factory tourque converter is "loose" and stalls at 2000 rpm . The 1.7 RR did not seem to help or hurt bottom end.
P.S.
The factory exhaust manifolds on your '92 are a bit bigger than than the newer ones and flow better , in your case headers would gain less than the 20 hp & 20 ft lbs that the newer trucks get out of headers. I have read that those manifolds are worth 7-10 hp on a newer dakota.

Hey Bill, I already have a good idea of your answer, but what's your shift point rpm/redline on that stock long block 318?
Shelby Dak #1246.
360 Magnum, Viper Level 2 tranny, 3.90 gears, 2,000 stall, slightly nasty cam, M1, 750 AFB. Bill, we could have fun racing each other all day!

The best thing about the 4.7 is the trans, that trans behind the 5.2 or 5.9 would be a nice combo.
Don't get me wrong, the 4.7 is alright but a low rpm torque monster it is not.
Define where you want the torque and what for - it will tell you what parts you need.

Message: The 1997, for the 318, ratings were 230 bhp at 4400 rpm and 300 lb-ft torque at 3200 rpm.
The 2004, for the 4.7, ratings were 230 bhp (172 kW) @ 4800 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. (400 N•m) @ 3200 rpm.
It makes 5 lb-ft of torque than the 5.2 and it revs a lot quicker. I like the 318s and they fact that you can find a lot more sh!t for them, but the 4.7 is a beast and nobody can deny that.
Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer. well at least a stock one

Message: Yea a real beast, tell my Dad and brother that LOL
Dad still complains how the 4.7 downshifts at the slightest hill and he has owned it for going on 5 yrs!
Brother just went from a 5.2 Durango to a 4.7 Durango - let's just say he wasn't impressed.
I think I'll keep my 5.9 thank you, not sure I would like towing a #4500 boat from Pa to Fl with the 4.7 - well unless it had steep gears, might be ok then.
But then again, I know people who have the 5.9 and 5.7 and prefer the 5.9 for towing/heavy load.
Just depends on what you want and need it to do.
I will say the 4.7 with 5 speed/3.92's would be a nice combo. The 5.2 lays down too quickly in the upper revs - in stock form.

Message: at a local dyno day with a bunch of dakota/durangos, my stock 5.2 durango made more horsepower than most of the modified 4.7's and more torque than all the other modified 4.7's.
it wasnt anything crazy, but 184 rwhp and 262 rwtq. most of the 4.7's were getting around 230 rwtq that day. only 4.7 that made more horsepower was a 5 speed manual 4.7 (less drivetrain loss). it made 202 rwhp with cold air intake, superchips tuner, 70mm throttle body and exhaust work. it only got 260 rwtq.
or course all the 5.9 guys were getting just over 200 rwhp and around 300 rwtq.. fuggars.. lol
here's my new 5.2.. 95 4x4 auto. it has all the following mods and the only thing that made it loose bottom end was going from a 28.9" diameter tire to a 31" diameter tire.
installed
* Mopar Performance PCM
* Crane High Intensity 1.6 roller rockers
* Crane 3/8 stud kit w/guide plates
* Comp Cams double roller timing set
* Comp Cams 20-602-9 camshaft .480/.512 206/210
* Erson 5/16 hardened pushrods
* Non-EGR late model intake
* Modified stock throttle body
* Dynomax 2.75" cat back w/turbo muffler (cheap)
* Test pipe in place of cat
* electric fan
* mopar performance 7.5mm wires
* autolite 3923's
* 2" torsion crank/2" steel blocks
* 120 Amp alternator (was 70 amp)
i'm not done yet, and i've got a few pieces waiting to be installed
* PPH mid length headers
* Custom 2.25" y-pipe
* Flowmaster 40 series muffler
* March Performance underdrive pulley kit
* M1 4bbl intake w/turtle
i believe all this will make a light genII 2wd a rocketship
right now the top end and midrange are unbelievable. I'm going to go from 3.55 to 4.10 gears to help with the tires.

Message: Oh well... I am not discrediting the 318. If you was torque out of a 318 then just stroke the b!tch. Then supercharge it and you will have one mean 318. The 4.7 is amazing for it's size and ability to make decent power. I am just going to throw one thing out there though. If a setup like mine can outrun a R/T, then I think that I could outrun a 318. Stock of course, but that makes me feel better.

Message: R/T's are just heavy pigs. the main benefit (IMO) to the 4.7 is the transmission. It's got shorter first couple gears than the 46rh/e behind the 5.9. first gear in the 46 is 2.50. that should be the second gear.
i've got a 46rh behind my 318 because it's a 4x4. i can take 1st gear up to 50mph because of that miserable 2.50.
awhile back, there was a kid at the local track that had a 97 318 RC 5 speed. stock motor other than cheap cold air intake, flowtech headers (crappy) and a flowmaster. He was knocking off 9.2s in the 1/8th and let me tell you.. if he learned how to shift, it would of been in the 8's. same time a guy with a rc R/T with headers, exhaust, m1, mike leach tune.. etc, was just running 9.4's. I'm not saying this is every truck.. but how it went down that day.
no doubt a 4.7 is a good motor. it makes up for in technology where it lacks in displacement.
