Message: how often does the stock timing chain go out, or bad? i heard they suck really bad.
how hard are they to change on a V8? im thinking of going with a comp cams double roller.

Message: you don`t know how to change a timing chain, and you have a blower?? you`ve got to be the dumbest a$$ on the site! it`s one of easiest thing on a smallblock to change. pull belts, pulley, water pump its right there in front of you under the cover behind harmonic balancer.

Message: it's easy considering the parts are inexpensive i would change it at about 50,000 miles if you have the oem chain. A good bouble roller you can go to 80,000 miles. If your motor is blown go with a bouble roller it can handle the stress better.

Message: Factory chain should make at least 60/70k miles before they show fatigue. From the posts on chaines, I can see the Dak chain is fairly weak. A double roller is the way to go, be sure to replace the tensioner and the water pump bypass hose. They'er not overly hard, if you changed a chain before and have the tools. Do you have a motor book to go by? Myself, I'm just a little old for timing chains.

Message: Hmmmmmm....So how do you know if the factory chain requires replacement? I have no reason to believe the factory chain has ever been changed in my truck. I bought it used with 18K miles on it and currently it has over 90K miles. I keep it well tuned up and change the oil every 5000 miles or so. I run it nearly 100 miles daily round trip to work and I've taken it on a few trips from Delaware to North Carolina. I also use it to tow my boat occasionally. To date, I have noticed nothing that would make me suspect my timing chain is fatigued or in need of replacement. So again, what indications would I get that my timing chain is about to bite the bullet? I'm not worried about changing the chain myself, if I could tear apart and re-assemble jet engines, I can do a timing chain.

Message: Chill Eric,
You gotta remeber the mentality of dogliftsleg. Think about it, how smart can he be if he gets his kicks off flamming you for asking a simple question. He's too chicken to even include his e-mail addy with his BS name. Just remember... a dog lifts his leg for 2 things.....
1. Peeing on a tire.
2. Licking his nutz sack.
As often as he lifts his leg, what do think he is doing more of?
Just food for thought

I'm thinking when I do my cam in the BLOWN R/T, I mite try a gear drive setup.

Message: Dakota39m
At 90K miles your timing chain is sloppy. You might not feel any power loss because it happend over time not all of a sudden. If it does break which is highly unlikely but has happend your going to buy more than just a chain possably a new top end. Not to mention it's cheap insurance.

Message: Well then. I guess I have a decision to make and soon. Do I want to just keep on running what I have and hope it holds together or start saving for new cam, roller rockers, lifters, and double roller timing chain. I figure that if I'm going to tear into the front end on the motor, I might as well go all the way in and ugrade the whole deal. My original question remain unanswered....how can I tell if the chain is getting ready to fail? Does it start making noises or does it just break? I have to look at a good parts break down on the motor but I don't believe the valve are that close to the top of the piston that they would clip them if the chain broke. I do know that is usually a problem with overhead cam engines. If I keep my fingers crossed that it holds together, I can save my money for a new Dak when they start putting the Hemi in them. Now if that won't be a change...3.9L to Hemi...

Message: Timeing belts=50,000-65,000 average but their are some exceptions. Chains=80,000 to 120,000. When you change your chain change the sprokets as well. A double roller is always a good investment. If ever a parts guy ask's you if you want the quite sprocket or the noisy one get the noisy one. The quite one is nylon and wears out fast and the noisy one is made out of heat treated steel and will wear much longer!!

Message: Have to agree with sandman. I had the factory nylon gear in an older 318 (5.2). Once worn, it wouldn't idle, died frequently and the timing was all over the place at idle. Go with a quality true double roller, Cloyes is one i'd recommend.
