Subject: Installed H.O. Cams Yesterday IP: Logged
Message: So I put my cams in yesterday. Somewhat of an adventure. Thank God I had my Dad there for an extra set of hands. The installation of the cams themselves was seamless and very easy. But it didn't go without it's snags. First, I borrowed a torque wrench from a buddy to do the 100 inch lbs for the cam retaining bolts. I should have known, it didn't feel right. I snapped off the first bolt inside the head. Amazing huh? I was in somewhat of a panic at this point and was debating over drilling, tap and dye set or a bolt extractor. THEN!!! This old guy tells me to put the broken bolt back in there, put the air ratchet on, push down real hard and back it out. I know what you're saying, I was skeptical too. But didn't that damn thing spin right out of there like it wasn't even broke? I'll be damned. Amazing. So I got another bolt, no worries. My other snag, those damn clips on the fuel injectors holding them on to the rails. One fell inside this little openning in the head, external, no worries but I couldn't replace the clip. SO! I bought this little magnet and fished it out. Amazing, no worries. I used the method that yates-in-de used, screw drivers, tie backs etc. Worked great. Timing was perfect, started up perfect. BUT!!! Here is my question. What is the trick with the fuel injectors and rails? First, I had the number 4 injector leaking so I adjusted the rail and it was fine. Then the number 3 injector was leaking where it goes in the rail, so I fixed that. Everything was great. I drove the truck for an hour last night with no worries. Did I mention this thing will lay rubber like a son of a bizzitch now? I thought it would lay a strip before, dayum!!! Okay so no worries, right? Wrong. I get in it this morning, drive for about 15 minutes and all of a sudden can smell gas, luckily I'm in my drive way, haha. So I open the hood and this time it's the number 7 injector at the top where it goes into the fuel rail pissing out fuel. I was late for work so I took the minivan. What gives with those damn things? As soon as I get one stopped from leaking another starts, and how odd that it started all of a sudden like that after turning into the driveway? Alas, some more work to do after work. Did I mention the new found power? It's no super charger but for the money spent and the time put into it, yeah, it's hella kick ass. It's got a lot more jam than it did. I put all synthetics through it too so that helps. I'm thinking now that I have the cams, cold air intake, I may need to be openning up that exhaust. The factory muffler just doesn't sound right either; too quiet. Any thoughts or ideas on those injectors?

Aaron

Message: Lynn,
Looking back I should have worked it so I didn't have to take them off either but I just removed everything to make as much room as possible. I was able to remove and reinstall the valve covers in seconds because EVERYTHING was out of my way. I guess I'll just have to reseat the injector in the rail again! haha...
P.S. Lynn, I printed off all of your picture and they came in quite handy!!! Thanks buddy!!!

Aaron

Message: Oh yea, on the exhaust I use a Flowmaster 3" in and out and it sounds good, not to loud and not to quiet. No in cab drone at any speed. It also goes all the way to the back corner as a stock system would. If you haven't heard it check it out at Three Little Runs.

Message: Cool video Lynn, sounded like you missed 3rd on the 1st run.
Selcher, As Lynn said, I never touched any of my fuel rail or injectors,(disconnected them that is). If I hadn't done my research first, I would have thought it wasn't possible, but it is.
