Subject: Idea for an improved heatshield... IP: Logged
Message: I was thinking about machining my own heatshield for my cone filter... I would make it a canister that would clamp over the filter... On the half of it facing away from the engine, what if it had many 1/2" (or somewhere around that size) holes on it, each spaced an inch - 1 1/2" away from eachother, maybe even in a spiraling pattern?
In high school physics, one thing I remember is that air being pulled/pushed through a small space will be cooler than it would if it were being pulled/pushed through a larger opening. For example, hold your hand in front of your mouth a few inches, not wide open but open, and blow really hard on it... The air will be warm. Now, do the same thing, but close your mouth leaving a very small opening and blow again the same... It'll be cooler! And then, the front of it could be a normal size opening with a flex-hose like the heatshields from intenseperformance.com
Anyone think this would work/improve a heatshield?

Message: I think the whole smaller hole thing doesn't actually lower the temperature of the air. It's just moving faster, and therefore more air comes in contact with your hand, evaporating more sweat, etc. so it just FEELS colder. I think the hole would just restrict airflow.

Message: give the heatshield lots of room, that will give the air a buffer zone keeping the hot air farther awayand reflecting some of the heat. that air on your hand trick, look at it this way; when your mouth is just about closed you are accelerating the air to where it is stripping the heat from your hand not adding it, your breath temperature isnt changing just air speed. i majored in physics in university.
