Subject: PCM Flashes...Who's Lying? IP: Logged
Message: Im on a mission to find the best flash for the buck for my 2002 R/T. Consensus has said the B/G Chrysler flash is the best. But Im concerned with the price as compared to its competitors. So Ive spent some time on the phone with B/G, Kenne Bell, ASE, and KRC. First KRC dont do it for the newer trucks. My biggest need in a flash is the shift points and timing/fuel/spark curves. The tech at Kenne Bell said that their flash does nothing to the shift points and that the computer can not adjust them and told me to beware of anyone who said their PCM flash could adjust shift points. Also a guy at ASE basically called the B/G man a liar too. So are these poeple just trying to get my money by saying the B/G flash is bogus ? or are they just mad cause the BG flash is so much better ? Whats the deal guys, who should I believe ?

Message: The KB flash does change the shift points
on electronic transmissions (4.7L auto). Not
the trans in the R/T.
ASE, installs a chip. They can't show you
a dyno sheet, cause they only calculate the HP
increases. Before and after dynos of the 4.7L,
shows no HP gain.
B/G seems to have the best flash, for the
5.9L, they have two. One for an M1 and one w/
M1.
My computer is at Kenne Bell right now.
There 24 hour turn around is now at 48hrs
and counting.

Message: Thats kind of funny that they say that. When I had the stock PCM in my 2001 R/T, it would shift at about 5000rpm's. Without doing anything what so ever to the transmission or TV cable, it magically started to shift at 5400 with the BG flash being the only difference. Go figure, I guess its just coincidence.

Message: I've spoken at length with all of the PCM companies, and B&G has the best, hands down.
Kenne Bell's representatives can barely quote anything beyond what's on their Optimizer fax form.
ASE wouldn't answer much of anything over the phone ("Fax us a sheet with individual questions and we'll send a reply back later").
I spoke with a Hypertech rep at SEMA, and he couldn't answer jack squat about their product for the Dakota R/T, instead opting to show me their brochure (which specifies no rev limiter or shift point changes). When I asked about the problems people have been having with the Calibration Table issues with the HPP, the idjit tried to say that I must have been thinking about SuperChips and not their product.
Dave at B&G might be taking us all for a ride with his elevated prices, but he gets away with it because the flash is the best of the bunch.

Message: Dave is not a liar, I use his flash for all the 2001's I build and the 2000 back trucks get done exclusively by Leach/Fox/Zimmer. The shift points are raised on the boxes he sends us to 5500 in drive. The 4.7L is the one that won't accept TCM inputs. I don't even have time to program the 95 and olders anymore. That is why we send it out.
I doubt that KB (ASE) can set the Tranny Control Module for a 4.7L.
They are all expensive, and I even have lost peak horsepower on Dave's flash with certain combinations. But beggers can't be choosers, I still use it.
Barnone, the standalone fuel injection system is the best way period. Some guys spend up to $1700 on band-aids and control items (PCM, Split Second, additional flashes, etc) when they could have done the ultimate setup for their specific combo. Then they complain the price is too steep at $2500, they were almost there!!!!

Message: If the B&M is all that's available for the newer folks then buy it. I love the increased shift points in my truck! For those with older gen3 trucks, like myself (99), the Mopar PCM might be the way to go. Unless the B&M flash is giving you twice the HP, then twice the price is not worth it. One can easily spend the extra $300+ on an M1 or power pulleys w/some electric fans, etc. Or add a few more $ for some spray! ;)
