Message: Take the diff apart and replace the ring gear and the pinion gear with the 3.92. You have to know how to set up a diff though for proper backlash and pinion spacing. Also if it is 4x you must do front diff also

Message: If you've never done this before my suggestion is to go to a dirveline or differential specialist. ~$600 parts and labor. It's about 50/50 parts/labor. Make sure the place is reputable, does high performance drivelines etc. If nothing else, make sure the pinion bearings are replaced with new ones. Plus a lot of people don't save the old gears but they're yours. Keep them. You never know.

Message: What are the performance benefits of switching gear ratios? Has anyone checked 1/4 mile times for both and compared? What about highway driving, will I be running 70 mph at 4500 rpm!!?!
I am just wondering about performance vs. cost

I can't speak for 1/4 mile times as I have to go down the track. However, I can tell you that the difference between the 3:55's and 3:92's is night and day.
The "performance" gains are very noticeable no matter what the rpm range and will snap your head back whether it's off the line or going 80. It's a lot of fun to go down the road popping the throttle and almost lifting the front tires ;-)
And as for on the highway, my engine is turning 3000 rpm's at 85 mph. About 300 rpm higher than with the old 3:55's.

Message: I cant belive it, i went to my dealer last night, and asked how much it would cost to swap out my gears for some 3.92s, he said "$645 before labor". Now that is expensive, i need to find a good shop and have them do it for me. Im just starting to lose faith in my '5 star' dealer...

Message: Check out the 4x4 shops in your area. They do gear changes all day long. They are also usually cheaper than race shops.

Message: FWIW, my 2001 4.7/AWD/Auto/T&H/Limited Slip with 3.92 pulls exactly 2000 RPM at 60 MPH.
To be honest, I thought the RPMs would be higher at highway speed with the 3.92
Just hit 500 miles, time for the right foot and go pedal to become a bit more intimate with each other!
