Subject: Exhaust Questions IP: Logged
Message: Hey Team,
I have a 99 CC Auto with the 318, and I currently do not have a muffler. Now, it sounds great, and to me it seems faster, but I hear quite a bit of talk on this board about 'performance' mufflers.
I don't mind the drone, and I love the sound, so is there any advantage or reason I should buy a Magnaflow or MBPR or whatever they are called?
I have a single 3" pipe from the cat all the way back.
Opinions backed by facts are quite welcome.
Thanks to anyone to provides info!

Message: I wish that I had your 5.2 in my 2002 with the V6. Then, I'd probably be thrilled with my Magnaflow stainless muffler. These mufflers are built like a showpiece...extremely high quality. Unfortunately, on a V6, they sound like 100% total and undiluted CRAP. No performance numbers or anything like that, but I've heard many reports of V8 owners who installed Magnaflows and were extremely pleased with the sound and performance, so...I thought that it should also work on the V6. NOT! Live and learn.

Message: Well, I like it loud, but mostly if there's HP to be gained by running a muffler vs. no muffler, I'm interested in that.
I'll probably keep everything stock for now with a single 3" out. May upgrade to a high-flow cat in the future, but for now I'd just like to go with what's best with the stock setup.
Thanks for the input! So you are saying that I'll gain 17HP by putting a muffler on? Doesn't that create backpressure? I'm new to this, thanks for the help!

Message: I don't see how adding a muffler would add 17hp. I haven't used a dyno but I can tell by just a stop watch and the feel that its faster without it. I have headers, high flow cat, and thats it.

Message: Ryan,
Sorry.I meant the catback system.Keep the setup you're running now.A muffler by itself won't add 17 horses. My bad.
I was told that you need a little backpressure so that you won't lose torque.

Message: Thanks for the help guys.
I may have to sell my Dak soon :(
Not sure if any of ya'll ever heard of National Airlines? Well, I work(ed) in reservations (it's actually outsourced, so as of now I still have a job) but there are quite a few reservation agents with nothing to do right now...will have to wait and see.
National Airlines unexpectantly shut it's doors on 11/06. Check out www.nationalairlines.com
It's a sad deal.
Anyone around North Dakota or Minnesota who is interested in a red Dakota SLT 4x4 with the 5.2 auto? Only 51,000 miles! (no muffler) :)
