Subject: Any experience with Kumho tires??
IP: Logged

Message:
Anyone ever used Kumho ECSTA 711 tires on an RT?
I ask this because I can get a set for $250 installed from a local guy. The RSAs on my truck still have lots of life, but Ive got another set of wheels I want to use for putting around town with.
Are these tires just hard as a rock? Are they noisey? Need some realworld feedback!
Thanks

Installed a set of Kumho ECSTA 712 on my 01 Formula (275-40-17)... they were HORRIBLE! Rode hard as a rock (could feel every little pebble), followed every imperfection in the road, wouldn't go straight for nothing! Replaced with BFG Comp TA HR4 (same size) and now drives straight and true with a much improved ride. They are cheap for a reason. I never drove mine in the rain, but I would bet money that they would be downright dangerous.

Any other recommendations other than the BFGs?

I'm probably not the right person to ask. I'm not gonna buy any more cheap tires. I just bought a set of Goodyear Fortera's (245-70-16) for my 97 Dak... they are outstanding, but a little on the expensive side. Superb ride, great handling, great wet traction. Paid $475 for four (shipped) from TireRack.com.

ask HSKR about the kumho's. he has them on his R/T and recommends them to everyone. A truck is a totally different story than a formula....

Paging Brian... paging Brian...
I'm surprised HSKR hasn't spoke up. From the cost standpoint they are worth it, they are almost 1/2 what a similar BGF tire costs or a replacement RSA costs. If Money is no object then there are better tires but the way a R/T eats rear tires I think you can't beat the Kumhos. My stock RSA's ride as described by RT66er, I really wanted the BFG Comp TA HR4 in 305/45/17 for the rear but they don't make them and most of the other BFG sizes are to small for a stock R/T (need to be 28") There is that Scorcher in the right size but from what I hear they are no better then the Kumhos. Most R/T guys go with the nittos though...

Thanks again for the info. Ive seen some Kumhos on a regular cab R/T, but it was owned by a 17yr old. He just installed them cause they were "cheap". Im thinking of going with the 20" dakota rims now. Or maybe a combo of 20s out back and 17s up front (ala Prowler). I will lower the truck from there. What do you think? ( I wanna hear it all, youre not gonna hurt my feelings...lol)

im assuming he needs 28" not just for the aesthetics but to retain the correct gear ratio...correct me if im wrong...
anyway, heres my 2 cents, i have toyo proxes s1 255/60/17...yea, i guess going with a 60 series i lost a little gearing, but these tires are soooo much better than the rsa's, (like whoa) and i had 45 series fisk fantoms for like 2 days, and i could spin them into next week if i wanted to...these toyos HOOK if youre not shy about warming them up...
when i go to get NEW tires i will probably go with a nitto 50 series...that many r/t owners cant be wrong
if you never venture out in the rain, and love melting rubber, go with the scorcher, otherwise i would definitely recommend the toyo's...
goodyear will never have another one of my dollars again.

On a stock hight R/T the 28's look ok but almost have to much gap between the tire and the fender. That size on a Sport or SLT looks quite a bit off (stock Diameter on the 16" wheels is 29") If you lower the truck you can get away with something a little smaller but going to a 26" tall tire still looks to small IMO. Then there is the whole thing of throwing your speedometer off. Tires is about the only thing that will throw the Dakota speedo off, even a gear change is automatically corrected by the Dakota but tires are not.

The Dakota can not automatically change it's gearing just b/c you change tire size. You would have to go to the dealer and get yourself a little computer upgrade. I'm suprised no one has mentioned Pirrelli (sp?) Scorpions for tires. Sure they might be a bit more expensive, but the tire and handling kick major ass.

No the dakota gets it speed input after the rear gears so chnging the gears does not throw off the speedometer. Seeing as how the tires are the last thing in the chain, changing the rear tire diameter does throw off the speedometer, and then you need the speedsensor thing adjusted.

I have just slipped into my smokeing jacket and my fire proof pants!!! Let the flams begin!!! I have had excellent luck with Sears brand tires. The ones I bought were made by Michielin(sp). I got 85,000 miles out of a Mud terian rated for 40,000 miles. The compound was soft and they were self cleaning. I had mine in 31X10.50.$74.00 a tire with mounting, ballanceing and road harzard. The BFG desert Duelers are also great but tread life will be short!!! Alot of guys are realy likeing the Scorpion for both price, traction and low noise. BFG wear guickly and so do Good Year Wrangler, Firestones and Futuras get good tread life but ride like rocks and are noisey,Michlins(sp) seem to give the best mix of wet and dry performance and low noise for regular driveing. My old truck has Wranglers in P235x75r15 and they are not very good in wet weather and ride a bit harsh$50.00 per tire with mounting and ballanceing at SAMS CLUB. Hope this helped a little!! If you need more traction look into sipeing your tire. Sipeing put 1000's of little cuts into the tread block of the tire. It increases wet and dry traction by 50%-100%.

i Dont have any experience with Kumho but i met a guy with an AWD Talon that had a set (unsure of exact model number) and he said he loved them. Used them on the street and did autocross racing in them. I know that isnt a truck but just some feedback. One think that you gotta remember is that any small profile Z rated tire is gonna be more noisey and harder than any S or H rated tire. I really dont think are trucks need Z rated tires but it just sounds cool ;-)

i just put a set of Yokohoma AVS "something something" 225/50/ZR16 tires on my Alero and compared to the 225/50/R16 goodyear ealges that were on it... all i can say is "Damn! Nice tire!"

a hell of a lot noisier but i can corner a hell-o-va lot better.... cant wait till i lower that thing
