Subject: Sidewinder Goes 222 mph IP: Logged
Message: There was a discussion here a while back about the Gale Banks Diesel Dakota that was being built to break a land speed record.
http://www.galebanks.com/banks_sidewinder.html
They haven't posted on their site, but they shattered the record by quite a margin. They were going for 210 mph, and set the record at 218. Since the speed is an avaerage of one run each way, usually one run is higher than the actual record. The top speed in this case was 222.139 mph. Bear in mind that, although this truck is the product of a huge budget, it is street legal, tagged & insured. It towed a trailer of its own tools & supplies out to Bonneville, the ran the number two days in a row. After that, they hooked the trailer back up & rolled on back home.
What's funny is the link below on the Turbo Diesel Registry where all the Ram guys are pissed off because it was a Dakota instead of a Ram.

Message: i give gale banks the most immense amount of respect for that feat...i read the first article about sidewinder, but never got the followup...and i 100% agree with his statement about the true measure of a muscle car being able to drive to the track, race, and drive home....THAT is why the only trailer my r/t is involved with will be the one im pulling another car on.

Message: On a side note the ECTA is having a meet in at the Maxton Airport near Laurinburg, NC this weekend. Costs $25 to join the club and $100 to run "the Monster Mile". Its a 2 day event. You have 5280ft to get your truck up to speed and the last 132 ft are the timing lights. Saw some older cars like Camaros going 165mph in a 15mph headwind.
I wish I was able to make this event, so I can get a baseline on my Dak for topspeed. I went 183 last meet on a borrowed motorcycle. In March (next meet) I will be gunning for 200mph on motor alone on the motorcycle.

Message: Alex, they meet 6 times a year. Very cool group that runs it. Everybody helps one another, but its still very competitive!
I dont think they run July or August. They definitely run in June though.
Do a Google search on ECTA-lsr
