Subject: Experiment with intake temps. IP: Logged
Message: Well I did a little experiment this morning, trying to decide if I need a heat shield for my intake or not. This was done on my 2001 4.7L
Now I’m certainly not a scientist, but I tried to do this as controlled as possible, trying to keep all things equal.
I bought a thermometer from Radio Shack, and have found it to be quite accurate. I did two tests.
The first one, I put the sensor directly in the intake tube, at the half-way point(360 Intakez have a connection in the middle) to read the in tube temp.
The second test, I put the sensor on the hood so that it hung down about 2” below the hood in the engine compartment, above the intake filter.
The air temp this morning was 34 degrees during the test.
I had an initial reading if 36.1 in the tube, after a 5 min. warm-up at idle, it was 47.6 I then drove out to the highway, go on, and drove at 50 mph. At 50 the reading was 39.6 in the tube. The I drove at 60 mph, reading at 60 was 35.5 in the tube. I got to work, and let the engine idle for 3 min. at normal operating temp. Reading at 3 min. was 85.0 in the tube.
Next, I move the sensor to the hood location.
Air temp was still 34.
At 50 mph, reading was 40.3 in engine compartment. At 60 mph, reading was 36.9 in engine compartment. I got back to work and let the engine idle again for 3 min. at normal operating temp. Reading in the engine compartment was 110.3
Like I said, I’m no scientist, but I don’t think that without a heat shield your really sucking up that much hot air from the engine, that so many people say you do. There is certainly a difference at idle though.
It was about the scariest thing I’ve done. Driving down the road, just waiting for that little sensor to break off and suck up into the engine.

Message: Hmmmm....Thanks for the info but does it really matter where the sensor breaks(if it breaks)? Either to be sucked up through the TB or more directly from inside the manifold...Hmmmm

(Turbo City dual intake... I love it but thought it
might suck up too much hot air... But I thought
what you proved: When you're moving, it's not
sucking in that much hot air!)
