Subject: Distributer Indexing? bernd? IP: Logged
Message: I have a question about indexing the distributer on my 1997 Dakota. We used the a snap-on scan tool and at idle the it read -8 degrees. I moved the distributer to set it to zero at idle. Im just wondering if anyone knows what the degree should be at idle? and if I did this correctly? The speed tweaks website gives you the procedure just no values, anyone else know anything on this, any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

Message: Yeah when I went to the dealership to get mine indexed after I had my cam put in (keeping in mind this guy isn't a typical Dodge rep, he does performance work on the side)...he said its always best if you can get it set to 0...however in my case it wouldn't set to zero to I got mine at +1. But yeah try to get it to 0 if you can.

Message: No they hooked up the computer at the dealership underneath the dash beneath the steering wheel and they might of turned the key to the on position but I know they didn't start it. They turned the distributor until it read as close to zero as possible.
Yes I noticed it had more power and it idled better.

Message: I am not sure on a 97 model, but my 94 Dakota is set at +12. This is the maximum setting. Do not go beyond +12. It might be advisable to only raise it to only +10 because of the low quality of gas out there. Stock mine was set at -4. It is not uncommon to find a stock Dakota in this range. It will not hurt anything to set at +12. I have had 2 Dakotas and this is one of the first mods I perform.

Message: How do you index the distributor on a Gen II, 96 to be exact? I have no wires other rhan the cam pos sensor coming out of the dist. Do I have to take it to the dealership?

Message: Well I am relived to hear that yours was done with it idling. I know my truck runs much smoother since I set the Distributer to 0 degress and set my tps voltage to .74. I just havent had a chance to get it to the track and see if i can better my 14.8. Im hoping for a 14.5, I should be able to pull it off considering the number of mods I have.
97 318 5 spd
2.02 polished heads
1.6 RR
R/T Cam (need a bigger one now)
M1
ported throttle body
MP computer
3 inch gibson
mopar headers
BFG dot's
.74v tps
dist set to 0 degree's
14.8 at 95 is way to slow
