Subject: HO Cam/Intake & Octane Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I got a question for all you guys with the HO Cam and Intake (Jeep parts).

A guy here at work, albeit a Jeep enthuiast, says that when I install the above mentioned parts (that I just ordered) I will have to use the high octane fuel (91) instead of the '89' that I have been using. He only talks Jeep, so I do question his knowledge of Daks....maybe its due to the different computer? Or he's just full of it?

What do you guys think?

I use 91 or 92.

If you I don't it tends to ping a little when I really get on it. Since I switched to the higher octane, no pinging, and it

Dr. Dakota,

I installed an ho cam as well as ho computer on my 93 dakota 318. Spend the money on higher octain gas!! Even consider, sunoco 94.

i ran mine on 91 and with the low octain the detonation(ping) fried the rings in the #6 and #5 cylinders. so if you like your engine don't stiff on the gas

HO cams installed here. I use 87 on a regular basis and no pinging. It does feel more peppy though with the 91-93 in it though.

I use 87 octane with no pinging. Also higher
octane gas has no more power than the lower
octane gas. The octane level is the anti-knock
property of the gas. The Jeep HO engine, has
a higher compression ratio, it needs a higher
octane gas to prevent pinging. Installing the
HO cams in a non-HO 4.7 does not raise the
compression ratio. There are different flashes
that DC uses on the computers from the
factory, with different amounts of ignition
advance. If it doesn't ping now, it shouldn't
ping after installing them.

Thanks kicker & Chipster...glad I didn't make a mistake by getting these. I'm starting the install next weekend if everything goes as planned!
