Message: I'd recommend an air intake upgrade first, whether it be a home-brew or store-bought. New plugs seem to be a big thing and relocating your AIT sensor and of course an exhaust system or even just a muffler. I'd check the archives of all these post to find more info on each of these. Theres tons of info here if you wanna brows through it. I haven't done very many of these things yet but I plan on it sooner or later as soon as the ole budget allows.

Message: What do you plan on doing in the future?
The biggest bang for the buck is to remove the crank fan and go all electric. More HP and MPG.
Next bump the timing up a few degrees. Then MSD 8.5 wires and champion truck plugs.
Air filter does very little if yours is clean but will help some on top end, same with just changing the cat back exhaust. IAT relocate small improvement. 180 thermostat was a power loss on mine as was 3923 autolight plugs.
My 99 5.2 4X4 used to get 15mpg city and consistent 19-19.5 highway. I would not settle for a power loss or mpg loss, if the mod doesn't help both I am not interested. Oh yeah, ran a lot quicker too.
My current 01 5.9 QC 4X4 is set up similar and gets about 14.5-15 mpg city 18-19 mpg highway and 16 mpg towing #1500 jetskiis doing 70 mph+ w/OD off. This was before the brake mod and I think I will see 19-20 mpg highway now hopefully. The 20mpg with a V8 4X4 has been elusive.

Message: honestly man,
skip the bolt ons, i found the 5.2 responded nicely to the R/T cam, without changing drivability which is nice when your at a light with a cocky kid in his dads s-10.
For the price of the bolt on mods it is cheaper and more efficient to just do the cam. If that doesn't do it for ya add the computer. It will remove the rev limits and allow tons more air. This will give you 50 horses for less than $1000!It is perfect for your 4x4 because it really increases torque. Electric fans and 5.2"s are bad combo. Keep in mind you will have to run high octain and a 180 t-stat.
have fun and don't waste money on small mods that cost but don't payback
