Message: Back from the track. The BS ends. No butt dynos,
or it feels faster, just facts.
My truck: 2001 sport quad cab, 4.7, 3.92, auto, sport plus pkg, 16" 255/65, tow pkg, hvy dty,
4460lbs with full tank(weight on CAT scale)
4,200 miles,
1/4 tank, 50 degrees F
Bone stock, excatly like it came off the showroom floor, tailgate up, in DRIVE
15.69 @85.8mph
Best run: With tailgate down, K&N, airbox "snorkel" removed, rubber piece removed behind grill, airbox pointed towards opening, in DRIVE
15.61 @86.55 mph
Not much difference from stock setup.
I made 11 passes(I know, I felt guilty on the way home)
OPINIONS/OBSERVATIONS:
Tailgate down: very little difference, maybe .4 mph
K&N: no noticable improvement over(new) paper filter,K&N was dirty, ran once with no filter and went slower...(?)
OD on vs. OD off: just put it in drive and go. No difference
Airbox "snorkel" removed: no difference, maybe a slight improvement with this and rubber piece removed and airbox pointed towards grill opening.
Manualy Shifting: 1-2 5650rpm 2-3 5400rpm(same point auto shifts at) I played with this some.
best result: manualy shift 1-2@5650 rpm and let auto do 2-3 shift(@5400rpm), couldn't really beat auto shift, only improvement 1/8 mile mph.
THAT'S THE FACTS, sorry for lengthly post.

Message: I think you would pick up some time with a GenII K&N or an intense performance Z tube.
Were you using a drop in K&N?
If you are going to manually shift your auto tranny, might look at a dyno graph because you may be out of your power band at 5650 rpm. On mine, the hp/torque are the highest at about 4k rpm, that might net you another .10? Just a thought.

Message: Heath considering the weight of your truck,I fell that was a very respectable time, after all,it is only 287cu ins !
Chrysler did there home work on this engine, can't wait for the new Hemi.I hope they put it in the R/T Dakota. Thanks for letting us know all the details.

Message: I was using a drop in K@N. A dirty one at that.
My best time was just putting it in drive and flooring it.
I manualy shifted just to see if there was any gains. Nothing gained really. The truck shifts on its own @5400 and 5300 rpm. Which really feels like where it should be shifting. Max power according to dyno charts is @4800rpm.
Not sure why my truck weighs so much(4460). All I have extra from any other quad cab is the tow pkg. The hitch weighs 100lbs tops.
I'll be removing the muffler next and keep you informed on how loud and any gains.
later,
Heath

Message: I just got a few DC service and diagnostic manuals for my truck and found something interesting as I was flipping through the pages. DC states that in order for the PCM on automatic equipped trucks to "learn" how to shift at wide open throttle, it is necessary to make repeated wide open runs. This will allow the PCM to learn exactly when to begin the shift, how much to retard the timing, exactly how long the shift will take, etc, so that the engine doesn't go past redline during the shift. If these practice runs are not made, the PCM will force an early upshift, resulting in reduced performance.
In other words, before going to the track, drive the hell out of it if you want the best times. Or at least that's how I read it.
