Subject: Whats better, true duals or cat back? IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone. I'm about to make a purchase on an exhaust system. Heres my question, should I get true duals, headers and dual mufflers or through a cat back system on with headers. I want the most peformance. I also understand that Mopar Performance headers makes the PPH for a 2001 Dodge Dakota R/T so with the 02 bungs welded in so you can remove your pre cats. Which ones are you guys running and which way would you guys choose? I'm really curious, I want this baby to sound mean.

Message: FastDakota, I wouldn't run true duals unless you are planning on doing heads, cam, and intake. The PPH and a nice cat back will be fine for stock or mildly built motor. True duals will kill your torque and the single will give you more back pressure which will help you save your torque.

Message: If you want it to sound mean, get the true duals. I would say, however, that if you want performace, go for the cat back. A word of advice - everyone has flowmasters. The sound gets flat out old. Get something that sounds different.

Message: I was surfin' the net the other day trying to find information on caculating the correct size for a cat back exhaust system. I found this website:
HeaderDesign.com
Really interesting .... they have on-line software (free) for designing headers. Looking at the form .. you enter: # Cyl, Bore and Stroke, Comp Ratio, Peak HP, RPM at Peak HP, Exhaust Port Length, No of collected Primary Pipes in One header .. sure worth looking into.
There is also a CFM caculator.
What I really found interesting though was one place where they state:
"The combined cross-sectional area of tailpipes on an engine should not exceed the combined cross-sectional area of primary header pipes, even for race engines. For normal street and highway driving, this ratio should be about 45%. For street performance cars this ratio should be about 50%. For street-strip applications, this ratio should be about 60%."
There is a lot of good information at this website .. and the numbers for the tailpipe caculations appear to be pretty well on target. (I underlined appear ... meaning ... to me they look good. One reason I wanted others to check it out).
Anyhoo .. I took the info and coded my first PHP. I have a form up on my website (mostly under construction but this part is working). You enter number of cylinders, OD of Primary Header pipes, Gauge of pipes, Single or Dual exhaust and type of driving. You get the caculated required tailpipe size. (Again .. I'm interested to see how these numbers relate to actual real-world requirements etc.)

Message: personally i would go for true duals. on my truck (87 2wd shortbed dakota-305 small block chevy-speed pro cam-.060 over dish pistons-eldebrock torker intake-600 dual line holley with mech. secondarys-summit roller rockers-guide plates-ported and polished heads-manley street flo valves...had to use ram horn manifolds b/c no clearence for headers..but imo ram horn manifolds flow as good as a good set of hedders) anyway on my truck a went with dual 2 in ch pipes into hollowed out backwards 17 inch glass packs and exited with two 2 1/2 inch tips on each side nascar style (in front of rear wheels) and talk about loud...my dad has 2 inch pipes with hedders and cherrybombs on his truck and it is very very extremely loud...also another idea is what my uncle did..2 inch pipes into dual 40 two chamber flowmasters each one has DUAL outlets and he went with dual 1 7/8 on each side with four 3 inch tips..it sounds really really nice..not like any other flowmaster around. or you could go with sidepipes..or my personal favorites straight outs..get a cam, intake, hedders, and go with two 3 inch pipes straight to the back..then it will roar :)

Mean isn't the word...nobody hassled me as I was driving home, not even a Lightning guy who was wondering what set-up I was running. Message: Sounds nice, thanks for the stories. I'm really considering a true dual, but I don't want to loose back pressure or torque. Also you guys are passing smog ok right?

Message: Emissions-well, I'm in FL so I'm not too worried about that. Although, if you did consider full duals, doing a full 2.5" with cats would do what you want (backpressure/torque) and could get you past the sniffer.

Message: Ok...here is the thing I was told by a exhaust guy about doing true duals on the dakota. He said that true dauls and planning to pass emissions was not possible due to the fact that the dakota's only have one bank to pull from and there would be no way to send two readings (what you would need...one for each pipe) to or through one bank. I am a firm believer in true duals, but if what he is saying is correct, then there is no way to run them and pass....Has anyone else heard anything about this or come up with a way around this aside from moving somewhere that doesn't inspect. Please help me as I am really wanting to do somthing here soon, but am at a stand still because of what I heard. Any suggestions would greatly help.
