Subject: what will it take to spank imports? IP: Logged
Message: i have a v6 3.9l 94 dak auto, so far i have 3" piping with a dipdown and a k&n air filter. so far ive heard that i can get a higher rear ratio, i have 3.5 and i might wanna get 4.10, and maybe pullies and a chip. but will these make a big diff? ive heard that the chip only shifts differently and i also hear that high flow cats dont help either, any advice is appreciated

Message: If you want to spank stock or lightly modded hondas thats possible. If someone in you neighborhood has a built 10second 4 banger then your screwed. I've found that nitous is a big help.

Message: well, i would like to beat just some lightly moded hondas, i odnt expect to beat the crx's or anything, but maybe a stock integra or some civics, if i got 3.73 or a new chip how much would that help, and what a high flow cat, i went to a muffler shop and they said it wouldn't help any.

Message: Either NOS , supercharger , or sell it. NOS and the SC will eventually ruin your engine. Gears , pulleys , chips , air filters will just nickel and dime you to death with very little performance gain.
I figured when you improve HP , it costs about $30 / 1HP.
I know you hate hearing it , but I would sell it and get a V8 and go from there.

Message: Why don't you stick to raceing import trucks!!! It is good to set lofty goals but atleast make them within reach!!!! A Toyota I4 or V6 in 2WD or 4WD with factory supercharger would eat you up. A 2WD Tucoma with V6 will eat you alive. When Chevy bumped up the power of the 4.3 in like 93 or 94 in the S-10 the Dakotas were basicly being eaten alive. If you realy have money to burn and you have your heart set on haveing a fast V6 you need to talk to Bernd. I belive his V6 Dak is supercharged and running NO2. You are not going to do this on a budget.

Message: While I would agree that a I4 4x4 compact is a dog the V6 are not bad. The 2WD v6 compacts are fast. They are lighter then a Dak but durability is not an issue. While I am always hopeful I have never seen an American power train outlast it's Japanesse competitor. Heck the Jeep Grand Cherakee or may be it was just a Cherokee and the Toyota V6 trucks used the same borgwarner automatic for a long time. The only difference was torque converter and bolt pattern on bell houseing. For a long time when installing a V8 in a Toyota you would simply order a TC for a Jeep with the V8 and a different bellhouseing to adapt to the V8 being used. I have never seen a correlation between weight and durability; where the weight is is much more important. As a matter of fact I would even support the idea of most Toyotas being boreing but durability is their trade mark!!! THe number are all available in the back of many automotive car magizines. I doubt that you will find any numbers for a Dak with V6. You do not even have to buy them you can just go to your local library or the news stand and check the numbers their. P.S. I do not race numbers I race people!!

Message: Dude get a 5.9 R/T. You can do a lot with a V6 but its too costly. Plus 3" piping for a v6 is way to much man. There is lack of pressure and could be some loss of torque. I wouldn't go any bigger than 2 1/2. Just get some headers, change your intake, cam and you'd be doing pretty good. I have a 2001 Dodge R/T 5.9 and I spank every import there is and I'm all stock baby!

Message: Well to beat most ricers it is not too hard. Just go intake, headers, exhaust, chip, and nitrous, you wil be right there, the gearing will help too, but go with 410s not 373s. DOnt worry about the pullies etc, that is not what your looking at, just air in air out, and say a 75 of squeeeeze and it is going to be fun. The gears would get you going as well.

Message: look at bernds v6, a LOT of work and in the
low 14's, most 4.7's and R/T's run in the mid
to high 14's stock.
If you are willing to spend a lot of time and
money to go fast, start with a slightly larger
power plant. you could always sell your truck
for a decent down payment on a new dakota.

Message: thx for all your help guys, the problem i have is if i should sell it and get another truck or car, or just put some money into it. So what should i do to start off if im gonna keep it. if 3" is to big then should i just buy another flow thats 2.5 or what?
oh and btw, i have beat a jetta with a muffler thats stick, the basic jetta ofcourse, an 83 gt and a 2001 4cyl ranger stick. so im hoping getting 4.10 gears and some other stuff would help. I was also wondering if i got a stage2 chip, how much would that help? does it just change the time it shifts or does it actually raise hp.?:/
