Subject: idler pulley? ...please help IP: Logged
Message: I bought a short belt for my 94 dodge dakota and its about an inch too short (cut out a/c). It also looks like the belt will rub on top of the water pump pulley cause when it goes around the power steering and comes back to the idler it looks really close. I think this belt will work and tension right if I also bypass the idler pulley you have to swoop under before getting to the alternator. So what is the purpose of this idler pulley. Can it be bypassed too....because that way the belt will head from the power steering straight up to the alternater and won't have to go under the idler pulley and come close to hitting the water pump pulley.....thanks for your help

Message: You don't need to bypass the compressor-just turn the A/C OFF. The rotor spinning by itself pulls no measureable HP.

Message: so if a 1lb pulley doesn't pull any hp....why do they knife edge cranks to remove ounces? why do lightweight flywheels?.....the pulley by itself will cost you about 5 hp on topend so i myself am serious about getting every last ounce of power. Now doesn't anybody know why there is an idler? and what happens if you completely bypass it? I guess i will end up finding out on my own

Message: 1) Cranks are knie-edged to reduce windage.
2) Lightweight flywheels are for faster spinup (less inertia)
3)Try about 0.5 HP. Trust me, WE'VE MEASURED IT!!

Message: You have measured it......really....where is the dynographs?....No lightweight flywheels not only drop revs faster but they increase bearing life and free up gobs of horsepower. Ok let me use something you relate too. You are spinning around in circles. We attach a big steel 35 lb plate to your head....will you roll around as fast...no....ok and at your feet we will run a belt to an open fixed pulley doesn't do any work ...not a whole lot huh?...ok well imagine a whole system of five 2lb pullies that are on a fixed pt but don't operate devices. DAMN....you ain't spinning around so fast anymore are you?....now if you don't like my idea thats fine but in my post i asked what is the idler pulley for....meaning i'm determined to do this and want help regarding this ....not something to change my mind. Now apparently you don't know the answer but all you know is how it won't work....ok whatever.....my orginal opinion was that the idler pulley was to help snag the belt down low to get a greater coverage area on the alternator pulley cause of the realtively high a/c pulley. Now that the a/c pulley will be gone i don't think i need the idler since i coming from a lower pt (power steering pulley) but i was wanting opinions on this and why the belt i bought was too short ( and is the right part number)....but nevermind.....oh and labrat....i have seen lightweight aluminum pullies that don't ud any accessories and still add 3-5 hp....so how do you explain that.....don't think too hard about it

Message: The idler pulley helps the truck idle. If you bypass the idler pulley, the motor will race out of control straight to redline and blow up. The belt must go around the idler pulley or your truck will blow up!!

Message: lmao!! you have to run the belt under the idler pulley, and around the alternator. it will still touch the idler pulley though.
i personally think its a waste of time myself.

Message: This doesn't answer your original question, but it will validate your quest..... Duner ran a short belt on the dyno on his 4.7 motor (prior to the turbo). The routing of the belt misses the power steering pump and the alternator. The short belt combined with no clutch fan was good for 22 free horsepower. It just takes a little more upper body strength to drive it around the pits with no P/S. ahahahhaha
Ever since I saw that I started running the short belt at the track. it's good for .25 in the 1/4 mi.

Message: why not do what i have heard some RT guys do... take the belt off altogether!
seriously.. they push it up to the line and run it, then put the belt back on.

Message: I was just trying to point out that bypassing the compressor won't gain you a thing. Bypassing the alt and ps pump will see definite gains, as will removing the viscous fan. Hmm...seems as maybe I was just offering advice.

Message: Actually me & Duner use the A/C pulley as a second idler pulley when we run our short belt....
hahahahahahah!
Lab Rat's right. You really dont' gain a thing by JUST bypassing the A/C pulley.

Message: ok this will be my last post. First off in regards to the cracker who said bypassing the idler pulley will make the truck race to redline....that was plain ignorant. Next i know the clutch only engages when the air is on and the rest of the time the pulley is own its own. But i want to get rid of the weight of that pulley and i figure i can just disgard the idler pulley as well. The only thing i was worried about was the belt slipping on the alternator pulley cause of no idler pulley (thats the only reason i believe the idler is there.) Now everybody just types about how there is no gains and crap. Alright I think the pulley is ugly as hell and i just want it out of the way ok ...hows that....will that work for you? Pick another reason if you don't like mine but all i needed to know was why the idler?....I'm getting really pissy with the replies here. Its like nobody wants to help. I believe in helping others no matter what they want. If a guy wants to heat the hell out of his springs. I don't agree but I will tell him if he needs the info. The point is no matter what crazy idea a person has.....you give your advice on what their asking. Yall aint' tellin me what will happen (besides the redline joke haha) just whinin about why i'm doin it. So please after this post if you know anything about what i'm talking about and have been there and tried that then i'm all ears.....otherwise i don't want to hear all the wise remarks about wasting time and the such.
