Subject: 180 deg. stat after install?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys... I just finished installing the 180 deg stat in my 99 dakota. After I installed it and was adding antifreeze, I noticed the temp hand down lower than normal...looks good.

Then after I started driving, it was fluxuating up and down a bit. Now when i got back home the temp hand is at the same temperature as the stock 195 deg. NO change!!!

What's on the go? Anybody have any ideas? Compiter still learning, faulty stat.etc????

C..

Understand that the lower temp thermostat only sets the lower limit at which the thermostat begins to open. It is not setting the upper limit of the coolant. Once the thermostat is open the ultimate temperature of the coolant depends on the efficiency of your system (pump, radiator and condition of lines) to move the coolant and remove the heat. In addition the ambient air temp, temperature and load on the engine and how you are driving will be the deciding factor. I've tested stats in hot water with a good thermometer. The stats begin to open at 180 but do not fully open till about 190. They will remain partially open until it goes over 190 then does not begin to shut to about 180. I had a few 180 deg stats in my other vehicle which also has an Autometer mechanical water temp guage. I can see the exact same behaivor. It will go up to just over 190 then take a big dip back down to 183. Also do not trust the factory guage. The increments are not that accurate and there is a lot of dampening and it will not change that quick.
