Subject: Manual Trans swap, NEED HELP!!!!

hey all, (WARNING, VERY LONG POST!)

I have a 2000 Sport CC V6 with and auto trans. let me start this off with a tale.

ever since i got my liscence, 3 years ago, i have always wanted to have a manual. Ive never had the privilege to own a manual car in my family so the only times i get to drive one is when my friends let me drive theirs.

So anyways, 2 years ago my folks took me dakota shopping! I pleaded for a manual and used many excuses (saves on gas, a thousand dollars cheaper, ect...) but what do they say? "NOPE" i ask why, their reasoning for not letting me get one was "What if there was an emergency and we need your truck, but we dont know how to drive stick". So i ended up with an Auto, i love my truck dont get me wrong, but i just wish it was a stick.

2 years later (present time), guess how many times my folks drove my truck? THATS RIGHT!!! ZERO!!!! so now on to the real questions .

How can i swap out the auto trans for a manual one? What is required for this to work? Am I able to do this myself (im somewhat knowledgable about my truck, not a mechanic though). If i take it to a shop, do i go to a trans shop or a custom shop? How much (approximate) will this cost total? Is it worth the trouble or should i sell my truck and buy a manual one (id prefer to keep it though cuz there is lots of memories)?

Thanks for all the help

Anyone with a manaul dakota want to trade trans??? eh eh eh?!?!?!? :)

Don't know how much help i will be but here goes. I swapped trannies in a 88 honda before so not quite like a dodge but hey i switched from auto to 5speed so i know some thinks. First off on my car the pedals were a bitch. You will need a clutch pedal and on my car i had to get the whole assembly cause it was made all together. Second, I ran a mechanical clutch cable but you will have to install a clutch master cylinder / slave cylinder for the hydraulic fluid. You will also have to cut a hole in your floor and run the shifter. Then to remove the auto you have to unbolt the flexplate from the torque convertor. I had to remove the starter and the speedo gear as well then I was able to unbolt the bellhousing. Don't forget to drain the fluid too even though the tc will still hold some and pour down on you at the last minute. You then have to unbolt the flex and bolt up a new flywheel. You need a clutch and pp. You might need a different length shaft. I had to have a new driver's drive shaft (FWD). I didn't list this in any particular order but you get the idea. And oh...most tranny shops will not try and attempt it cause they lose money. p.s. they like ripping people off on easier types of jobs....and if you do find one they will ask you for a arm, leg, and possible a nut. The honda was pretty easy for me but i don't think i would try and attempt it on a rwd tranny with a tailshaft....i guess it depends on how much room you have under there. If you don't understand anything I just said....start shopping for a new truck and kick your parents in the ass....peace

dont get it out of a dodge truck. ive asked dodge why they didnt use one in an rt.they said theyve never devoloped one that could handle the torque. the only good one dodge ever made was the viper six speed.two reasons i wouldnt get it is that: price is oudtrageous, and if you were gonna race youd need slicks or youd sit and spin.

10 reasons to get it:
1. A WHOLE lot lighter
2. A WHOLE lot more gears to pick from
3. A WHOLE lot more effiecient
4. Ever heard of limited slip?
5. Shifts when you want it to
6. Hold Redline when you want
7. Quicker downshifts (assuming you don't suck)
8. No more tc lockup bs
9. No more auto tranny fluid
10. No worry about tranny coolers for weak autos
and as for the post about being weak i don't know since i have an auto but if you really want a manual that will hold gobs of power it can be done...
