Well, you -can- start saving for the Super Charger, but there is a lot that you can do to the engine that will make a difference now (and make the S/C work a lot better).

First off, plan on manufacturing a cold air intake using a K&N (or other) cone filter. You can either order a pre-made system, or build your own with parts from Home Depot and AutoZone.

Second, exhaust. Get a better flowing muffler. The more air you flow in, the more air you need to flow out.

Upgrade the ignition system. I hear the MSD system is nice. A new coil, a Borg&Warner Copper Cap/Rotor kit, and a Multiple-discharge system like the MSD will be nice when you put the S/C on.

Consider either porting your own Throttle Body, or purchasing a new one that's already ported for better flow. It's not hard to do your own, it's just time consuming with a Dremel.

Check out the message board for other little things. I can't think of much that's simple right now. How many miles are on your 318? If you've got over 100,000 miles, I'd consider pulling the engine and rebuilding it before doing the S/C. If your piston rings and such are worn badly, a S/C isn't going to help much because you'll just blow past the bad rings. If you -do- rebuild, consider upgrading the head-studs instead of bolts, a better headgasket assembly, new intake, cam, getting the heads ported, and maybe some lighter pistons/rods to improve how fast it revs...

Rob, it is a LOT cheaper to stick with the magnum engine that he already has. not only that, but if he lives anywhere near a city, there is no way in god's green earth he will pass smog.

if one were to get a carb'ed engine, why stop at a 318?? a 340 would be much better. personally, i would do either a 383, or 440.

Injection is nice, but i'd rather be blown.

Thanks a lot guys. I have 140,000 on mine and im 16 by the way but it sounds to me that a super charger is gonna be a lot more than i thought. I could probrably put a 360 or a 383 in it for less.
My truck is also an extended cab and i was wondering how many ext cabs have made it into the 14's.. Im running 16.40's now
