Subject: Thermostatic Switch Help....CW?

Well I did the electric fan conversion a few weeks back, and the damned thing was leaking like a sieve when I first finished it (it leaked where the thermostatic bulb goes into the rad hose) ... Since then, after much pissing around, I got the leak down to a very very slow drip.

Has anyone else had troubles with the thing leaking? Who else has installed the switch? I know CW has.

I put the supplied rubber gasket under the capillary tube and then wrapped it a couple of times with teflon tape. I even ditched the OEM hose clamp and got an old school one ... it helped a lot, but it still drips a tiny bit (nothing to worry about, but enough to piss me off!). I don't want to over tighten the clamp though cause the spigot on the rad is plastic and I don't want to break it.

Any suggestions? My next plan is to trim the gasket that came with the switch down a bit at the ends so it seals better, and maybe put some gasket maker on there, but I don't want a bunch of silicone floating around in my coolant system.

on the plus side, at least anti-freeze smells sweet :)

You could do the shade tree way and jam it inbetween the fins of the rad as close as you can to the upper hose. That is what I did. I didn't want to have to piss around with leaks. I can take a pic if you need.

Canucker: Your cams and intake are in do you want to come get them or will you want to ship them by bus? I will price the shipping on the bus to see.

Sneaky .. never thought of doing it that way ... I'll see if I can fix the leakiness, if I can't, I'll try your trick.

I'll probably come pick up the cams and intake Friday ... I'll have to get back to you though. How late are you there 'till on Fridays?

Let me know about the shipping ... it may just be easier in the end.

Thanks!

Canucker,

With my 4.7, in Houston, in traffic, it's hot. My factory fan is usually on anyway since I run the a/c most all the time. NO matter the temp, a'c on, elec. fan on. I of course long got rid of the belt fan and clutch, and did put a 180 in.

MY gauge never gets above about 1/8inch past the left hash mark.

Thats odd. Mine has never ever come on until I put the switch in ... and before I had a fuse in the switch, the PCM allowed it to heat up right past 100C before it kicked it in (220 F or so). Now that the fuse is in and the fan runs, it never gets past 180, or even up to 180 for that matter, as far as I can tell.

Do you ever run the A/C?

If you're going at least 30ish, it's a mute point.

I don't have A/C, and yeah once up to a good cruising speed the fan isn't needed at all.

Understood, add a few more ponies to your resume, w/o the a/c I mean. I can understand you wanting the t-stat. Must be nice NOT to have to run an a/c MOST of the year!

Well there's typically only two times per year where I was wishing I had A/C .. those are the days it gets past 30C (90F) ... but those days are few and far between and I'd rather spend them sitting in my yard with a beer than driving somewhere.

Hey CW: Any word on the shipping yet?

Heh I wish I could get away with out A/C. It hit over 100°F here for about three weeks straight. There is never any wind in the valley and all the heat gets reflected in.

I guess .. you're pretty much in the desert over there .. amazing what a difference a couple hundred km's makes. We get a good amount of Mountain air here.
