Subject: 8 3/4 to Gen II IP: Logged
Message: After reading the current thread about 8 3/4" rear ends for the Gen II, I would like to know if anyone knows which old model is the best swap in fit?(width)
I know I will have to weld on the spring pad and shock mounts. I need some info. I have some great deals for the ford 9" but would like to keep it Mopar.
Any help?
Thanks

Anyway..
An E body is about 1" wider (the one I used) the B body is almost exact but both require grinding off the original perches and weldin on new ones and lower shock mounts.
A body is said to have the exact same perch demension but is very narrow, some have used it but the rim has to have all of the offset to the outside, any inside at all I've heard and the tire will hit the springs.
If your planning 4 link and like high offset to the outside I recomend the A body.
If you like FWD lookin rims all the offset to the inside go E or B.
Hope this helped.

Message: actually the a-body is just a little narrower than the stock dak rear, and the perches line right up. however all a-body 8 3/4 have a 5 on 4 bolt pattern instead of the standard 5 on 4 1/2.

Message: Oh, I forgot to mention the bastard bolt pattern you will get with the A body rear. You cannot match that bolt pattern to the front of your Dak but you can match the B&E bodys 5 on 4.5" with rotors from a 90 Dak, yep that simple.
You can have the flanges redrilled (weakens them substantially) or order custom axles from Moser or someone like that to get the 5 on 4.5" in the A body 8 3/4.
Good luck

Message: I measured my Dakota rear end today.
It's 62.5" drum to drum at the wheel mount.
Anyone have any measurements for the various 8 3/4" rears available?
I would get better wheel fitment with a little narrower rear end.

Message: Thanks for the input.
The only info. I have found on the net:
67-72 8.75" a body 55.6"
62-70 b body 59.2"
70-74 e body 60.7"
71-74 b body 62.0"
These widths are listed as a "standard track" width. I don't know exactly what that means for a reference of measurement.

Message: I have a Direct Connection manual (ever hear of that?) and it list all the track's also.
I think thats flange to flange and thats not very acurate as different drum brake options set the actual rim mounting area in or out depending.
Those axles werent cheap were they Dragrdan?
Did you have to shorten your driveshaft?

You have a big block in a Dak?
"stronger than stock". You do realize Ma Mopar put 8 3/4 behind big blocks?
I have owned 2 Cuda's with 8 3/4's, one with 440/3.91 and one with 383/4.30's and that one went mid 6's in the 1/8th and the stock axles were never a problem. U Joints yes as that Cuda had a 4 speed.

Message: yes, i realize that( ive had 7 roadrunners + other b/rb vehicles) but ma mopar didnt put em behind any of her REAL high hp&tq motors, they all got danas. one of the runners i had would go 10.90s in the 1/4 on a good day and it twisted the stock axles, but not the moser's.
the 8 3/4 i put in my dak was pirated from a dart that i have for parts(former street/strip car that the brown cancer got too big a hold on). it was swapped into that car cuz the bb(on juice) grenaded the 7 1/4( go figure hehehe). the axles were installed then, due to my previous experience and to get rid of the "bastard" bolt pattern.

Message: also the width in the DC manual is flange to flange, but with the different brake systems the backing plate was offset to accomodate, not the axle length.

Message: Still getting parts together for the rebuild. Drums/shoes should be here today or tomorrow as well as new rotors/pads. I've got new wheel cylinders, hardware kit, etc. already.
I've got a new set of gears but I'm waiting on the bearings/seals, etc. from Randy's.
And I need to buy some 5 on 4.5 rims and new tires.
