Subject: HELP! Supercharger getting too hot IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I know there has been some talk on this board about this before, but I would like any new imput on this. Ok heres what I have: 99 r/t with vortech at 8lbs, 160 tstat, autolite 3923's, 85 percent water wetter, magnaflow exhaust, and a water alcohol injection system with only water in it. Tonight im out with my friend nothing to do, when a richy rich guy rolls up to me in a brand new lexus gs 430 lowered with exhaust, nittos and who knows what else. He revs at me and gets the jump but i romp on it and in 25 miles an hour im 1.5 cars up on him from the start of 40. He gives a confused look and thumbs up, and I am pretty happy, truck ran great. Then I drive to my friends house, stop by and then drive home. The truck is sitting 2 hours. I get back in and on the way to taking my friend home a 2002 ligtning comes up behind me with a girl in it. We get the front on a light and he hits it, I hit it and my truck runs like shiot, after first he quickly started walking away from me. I should have stayed even with him because i ran a porche that runs 13.8, the new Ls have maybe .1 of a sec on me. Sorry for the long post but im pissed i couldnt have shown off the truck 2 times in a row. The coolant temp is 130, and the supercharger is still burning hot. I was thinking of trying the boost by pass valve but will it do anything since it came with one? Please give me any advice you have,I need this thing to work for more then 1 run. Thanks for reading the long post

Message: I am just getting into supercharging my 96 dakota with 318 just blew the head gasket and im just getting ready to drop in a stroker 360 with blower and nos built by KRC. On my dakota i was running a seperate cooler that ran into the pump in the blower mine is a paxton. It always seems to be hot but so long as the engin is cool i would say your allright. Getting the jump in a race is huge and thoes lightings can be built to run, I have a lot of time at the track and have seen lots of things. Keep the oil changed all the time that is verry important for cooling and longevity.

Message: DRY ICE, and lots of it. cool the supercharger
down, an electric fan will help with coolant
temps, but the only way to cool down the
blower is with ice, or just letting the truck sit.
my brothers TRD s-runner gains at least 2
tenths when the temps are down. we used a
10# bag of dry ice, sitting on top of the blower
for 1/2 an hour, and it worked great.

Message: If your bypass valve isn't working that would do it for sure.
Mine made a big difference even at #6. The other option, and I'm starting to look into myself, is an intercooler.
One more thing, did you remove the rubber flap next to the radiator in front of your supercharger? That helps too. And check your air cleaner, I just discovered that mine is getting dirty really fast and is getting plugged.
Good luck and I hope this helps

Message: Ya,sounds like the compressor is getting heat soaked, like posted above check to see if the bypass valve is working properly and you might want to upgrade to a Bosch valve #0 280 142 103 or Bosch valve #0 280 142 108,the 108 if i remember correctly has a smaller travel and closes quicker. Some air ducting to flow cold air over the blower helps too and of course intercooler :)

Message: Don't do the ice on the blower unless you want to rebuild it. Ice on the blower will cause the housing to contract but the impeller will still be hot and has expanded from the heat. Next the impeller will contact the housing and either remove pieces of the housing or the impeller. I have seen this on Powerdynes, Vortech and the old Paxton Sn Series.

Message: lew, in addition to what you said, i have heard if you ice down the engine, it "shocks" it and is not good because of going from one extream to another. is that true?

Message: I know that if you go from one extreme to the other to fast you can crack blocks, heads, pop freeze plugs and do really nasty things to gaskets or seals when parts shift. This really applies to areas where two different metals come together such as intake to heads, or alum. heads to iron blocks and such. If you want to ice something down the best is the discharge tube on the blower and/or the blower intake. Just my .02.

Message: Wow, thanks for all the posts, I think im gonna route the intake tube out to the front where the flap is torn out next to the radiator, change the filter to a bigger one, and do the new bosch bbpv. My new thing im gonna toy with is putting a huge oil cooler to run between the engine and the blower to hopefully cool down the oil going into it, easy to do, pretty cheap and might as well try i guess. Any thoughts on this?
Kota, do you have any 1/4 or 1/8 times with your truck? Thanks again

Message: Do you have a boost gage? Before you do any of that stuff, you need to find out if the designed boost is there when the power drops off. If you experience the situation you described and you watch the boost gage and it is still at 8#, then a larger filter isn't gonna do it. In that case temperature is probably the culprit, but it could also be a fuel issue, you may need bigger injectors or a better ignition managment system. But, if the boost pressure drops off during the period you specify, then you've got a problem with the supercharger. It could be:
1. belt slipping
2. bypass valve lifting early
3. pulley not sized properly
4. too restrictive intake (dirty filter). This one will definitely cause high blower temps since air-flow cools the blower.
But, find out if the boost is there or not first.
