Subject: Can a new "crate" engine be used? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 Dakota 5.2 CC 4WD that will need to have engine work in a little while. Can one of the crate 5.9 (360) magnum engines mopar sells be used when retro fitted with all of the existing equipment in my truck? (Computer, distributor, Intake, exhaust, cooling, fuel delivery, etc) It seems that this would be the way to go instead of just rebuilding the seemingly weak 5.2 If so which one would work out the best. Would the higher horsepower version be too much for the stock electronics (fuel injection)? Thanks for the help. I would do the work myself. I am a former motorhead/drag racer.

Message: YES! it will work. i am puting a new crate 360 short block(mpi version) in right now. i have a 92 dak with a 5.2 and i am puting everthing back on the 360 from the 318 like heads, intake, thermostat etc. i got the short block for cost(1300 from mopar perf.) and had to get a new torque conv. and gaskets, etc. there is no problem with the elec. system(at least for mine there isn't) i just have to get a mopar 360 chip, and thats it. the cool thing about the crate 360 is that it comes with an r/t already in it:-) good luck man, if you need any help let me know!

Message: So you can.... Interesting. I look forward to your results. I noticed that you stated you will be getting a "chip" for the 360. Do you happen to know if they have something similar for a 97 5.2-5.9 conversion? Would Ihave to get someone to reprogram my entire on-board computer or would it be a simple straight changeover or even better a plug and play scenario. Also, what horsepower version are you looking at?

Message: the chip I am talking about is made for a 92-96 360 5.9. I am sure that the 97's and up have some kind of different electrical system(or chip). I have been researching about the computers for 97 and up daks. I havent heard too many good things about them, so I would take your time and find the best performing one that other people have "chanced" with their money. Thats what I did on my 318 and it turned out being the best upgrade I ever did b/c of all the research I put into it. I know not to get a jet chip( thats for darn sure!!!) they are horrible. try superchip. I have heard great responses from that company. but if you want a great way to build pride and horsepower, get a 5.9L. plus they are coming out with a twin turbo for it in a few days!!!!!:-) i hope i was some help to ya!
