Message: more air into the engine compartment, the
better, especially if you stick an intake close to
the opening.

Message: what truck do you have.
I just sold my intake and put the flap back on it made no diferance. Now i run a drop in K&N with the stock air box but that is a 4.7 can't say any thing about the 5.9, 5.2 or 3.9.

Message: i have a '01 with the 4.7 and I removed it when I installed my 360 airintakz. A guy I work with has a '01 with the 4.7 and his never had the rubber flap on his?! Take it off. More air has to be good, the filter will stop any debris.

Message: ya thats true... I think once you have an intake you would benefit from removing it. I think that flap is there in the first place to direct air to the air box. So if its gone why bother having it there. ...

Message: This mod would not benefit guys that have a K&N FIPK or possibly other intakes that have a heat shield as the flap directs the cool air into the fender well, this is where the K&N filter pulls it's air from. Removal of the flap would divert the air around the heat shield and onto the engine bypassing the filter.

Message: I installed an FIPK2 kit on my 2000 5.9 and noticed that as mentioned by Dakotadan, the air coming in after I removed the flap was on the wrong side of the intake heat shield. I bought about about $2 worth of bolts and spacers and moved that side of the heat shield to the other side of the air conditioning tubes. I then used a section of old heat shield (install headers and youll know what I mean)and fabricated a section to extend the FIPK shield so that I wouldn't get heat from the radiator. I am now getting significantly more cold are into the intake and it cost me only couple of few bucks. If you have this set-up, I highly recommend making this adjustment.
